Chapter 7: Hot Seat

I ring the doorbell for the second time, wondering if anyone is in the house, although it seems like it. The curtains of the glass doors are open. There is a part of me that hopes he isn’t around. A little delay wouldn’t really hurt anyone, or a forever delay. “Well, I tried.” I mumble and I turn around to leave. The door opens, making me curse inwardly. I turn back around and try to smile. “You came?” He says casually. “I came, I don’t have $800 000.” I sigh. “Why do you say it as if it is a burden? A day ago you were head over heals for me.” He grins deviously, and motions for me to get in. Despite everything that is happening, he is really handsome. ‘You are a psycho!’ I say internally. Why is he grinning? “Did you read your contract?” He sits on the couch, and I sit on the other couch opposite him. “Yes, I noticed my mistake.” I look down at my hands. He offers me a drink, and I tell him I’m okay. “If you don’t mind reminding me. You got $100 000 so that we can secure at least six months from you?” He scrolls through his cell phone. I nod, then I realize that he didn't notice my nod. He looks up from his phone, but he doesn't say a word. I shift under his intense stare. “Yes.” I finally say. “Then you still are still going to get paid monthly for working here?” He gazes at me. “Yes.” “Okay, understood.” He nods. “Then there is another $100 000 for other services rendered?” I nod in response. “What are those services?” “Well...” I swallow, wondering if he can notice the loud beating of my heart. “Yes?” He stares at me, and I feel like I’m in an interrogation room. “I need a moment to go to the bathroom.” I notice a smirk, but I get up to get away from him. When I'm in the bathroom, I take deep breaths, trying to calm myself because there is no way out of this. When I get back, I find him still scrolling through his phone. If he is reading the contact to find more questions to ask me, boy am I in trouble. “I bought you from Inaya, she was more than willing to get compensated. I just want to know what I bought.” He looks up from his phone. “You bought me?” I say out loud. He shrugs. ‘Why didn’t you ask her what you bought?’ I say internally, wondering why Inaya sold me for $200 000. If it is the contract that binds, she should've made me work for her at her new house. “She didn’t mention any names on the contract, just the address of the house. So, the contact binds you to the Henderson’s house. Just remember that my signature is on the contract as well.” He says, as if reading my thoughts. “She was never going to want money from you. I accepted the job because of her, not you.” “Oh! You don’t say.” He raises his eyebrows, his face unreadable. Did I just admit that my job here was just for Inaya? I look at his face to see if he is aware of what I revealed. "I mean, housekeeping duties are for women. So, I was working for her." I think I should change my career path. Clearly, I can't come up with reasons to save my life. "For women?" He chuckles. “Why did Inaya give you so much money before your monthly payments? Is it because she is generous and kind?” I don't reply, I feel as if I need to remain silent until I get a lawyer. “If you were a famous housekeeper or a chef from some show, I would understand, but you are an attorney, and this was supposed to be a part-time job.” He eyes burrows into mine. My chest feel heavy, and I keep wiping my sweaty hands on my summer dress. “Do I need to get a lawyer?” My voice shakes a little. “No, it’s just us discussing your contract. Unless...You are guilty of something.” “Nothing that I know of.” I try to look away from his intense stare. I feel as if he is reading my thoughts and he knows that Inaya paid me to seduce him. “Then there is no need to get a lawyer.” He relaxes his back on the couch. “I think she never thought you would succeed so fast.” “Succeed?” “You know what I’m talking about, but I see that she taught you well.” This is the reason he owns a private detectives' company. “What kind of modifications would you like on the contract?” I change the subject to avoid saying wrong things. “I would like you to work for me full time. Quit your internship.” “I need the experience from the law firm. Please.” “You can find another job as time goes on. You can’t work for me and my ex at the same time. How should I trust you?” “But I won’t say anything to her.” I plead. “Please, Mr Henderson.” For the first time, he avoids eye contact. Could he possibly be feeling bad for me? “Mr Henderson?” “I wish I could trust you, but she is very persuasive.” Wyatt's phone rings, and he winces as he listens to the person on the other end of the call. “Now?" He asks. He uses phone to open the gate, and then he gets up to open the door. "I couldn't stop thinking about you..." A sweet voice says, then she moves past Wyatt and paces in the room. Her mind seems to be far away. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you had company." She says sheepishly when she notices me, but there is a hint of sadness in her voice. "Taylor, this is Zara, my...my housekeeper." "Oh!" she finally smiles genuinely. "Hi Zara." What? "Hi," I try to smile a friendly smile. The woman sits on the couch, and Wyatt sits next to her. “This is Taylor. She will be spending A LOT of time in the house.” He smirks, holding her waist and kissing her cheek. “I have to go. Nice to meet you, Taylor.” I get up abruptly. I broke up with him this afternoon, and he has moved on already... “Wait, we haven't finished yet, and you must check with the madam if she would like anything before leaving.” “Would you like anything, madam?” Despite my fear of him, I can't help but glare at Wyatt as I speak to Taylor. He grins in response. He was already with someone when he sent me the gifts. Someone who is worthy of him, and pretty enough for him. Oh no! I have already bragged to Inaya, and she was right. He sent gifts and stalked me to make Inaya jealous. This womaniser! “No, I’m good. Thanks. I’m sure I can find my way around the house. We’ll be okay Wyatt.” Taylor's greyish blue eyes light up. “May I come back another time? To discuss this?” I say to Wyatt. “I’ll email you the details.” “Thank you.” I get my handbag and I say goodbye to him and his girlfriend. One good thing came out of this Taylor, I escaped the interrogation. “Let me walk you out.” He gets up from the couch. “No, I’m fine really.” My pace quickens, but he easily keeps up with me. “I will never let you get away with what you did. I really hope you have nothing to do with everything I lost to your boss.” He whispers and then he opens the door of my car. I'm doomed!
