Chapter 15: The Call He Shouldn't Have Made
"Ethan called Charlotte."
Nobody moved. I turned to Charlotte, my stomach twisting. "He called you? When?"
"Three times," Charlotte admitted quietly.
"You answered?"
"I thought he was hurt," she said. "I thought something had happened to him."
The room went heavy with silence, everyone waiting for Charlotte to continue.
"He didn't sound like himself," she said finally. "Not angry, not arrogant, none of the Ethan I used to want to slap at every dinner party. He sounded exhausted. Broken, almost."
"What did he want?" Adrian asked.
"He kept asking the same question over and over." Charlotte looked at me. "Is Amelia alright? He never asked about himself. He never told me where he was. He just wanted to know if you looked happy."
