Chapter 10: The Locker Key The words refused to make sense. Daniel Mercer had been dead for fifteen years. Adrian had buried him. Yet Victor was telling us the blood inside Ethan's car belonged to the dead man. My heartbeat stumbled. "That's impossible." "Run the test again," Adrian said. "We already did," Victor replied quietly. "Twice. Same result both times." I watched Adrian's face carefully, and what I saw there wasn't anger. It was something closer to a man watching the ground shift beneath a foundation he'd trusted for fifteen years. Victor set another document on the desk before either of us could recover. "The key from Daniel's grave," he said. "It belongs to a locker at the old railway station on the north side of the city. The building's scheduled for demolition next week.
