Riley's POV.
Marcus' jaw clenched at both sides, eyes bloodshot. “Who cares? That's the only possible way you can stay here.” He pulled Scarlet closer with a smile. “Scarlet would remain in her dorm until you could afford an apartment.”
He knew my impact in his life and career and yet he was trading it for a girl who didn't love him?
Scarlet scoffed. “Don't be ridiculous, Riley. Marcus is being generous enough.”
“Marcus—” I looked into Marcus's eyes and begged maybe he would remember the days I believed in him when nobody did, maybe he would remember how we started as two infamously orphans who struggled to be seen, maybe he would reconsider.
Guilt flickered through his eyes in a bit, a sudden appearance of the man that once fell under his feet for me until Scarlet's manicured finger trailed down his wet athletic abs.
“Take your belongings and disappear then if the option is not welcomed.” Marcus chimed in quickly and nudged past me into the bathroom as if he had waited one more second he would reconsider.
Scarlet gave a smug smirk and a dramatic eye roll that made my jaw tightened. “You looked like you wanted to end it? Would you walk through a speeding car for a boy who doesn't even care about your safety?”
“You don't love him, Scarlet. Everyone knows you are obsessed with Ryker Knox, it's obvious Marcus is just an option.” I yelled and her pupils dilated, a gesture she wore whenever she was pained.
She masked reality with a crooked smile and stood in my face with a smug. “Girl, you are right. I couldn't get the man I love, but I am famous enough to snatch an infamous girl's boyfriend.”
I gritted my teeth, taming the voice prompting me to kick that filthy smirk off her face.
Pacing out of the room, I dialed Kevin's number. He was a senior bartender at my former working place and he was my last hope.
It rang twice but no answer.
“Come on, Kevin. Pick up!” I muttered in frustration, almost throwing the phone at the wall when my phone lit up with his name.
“Riley Hayes! It's been a long time.” He hollered at the other end.
“Yeah! We broke up. I need you to find me another job I can survive with,” I twiddled my thumbs in disgrace.
“What?” He burst into a wide laughter that overlapped the revelry and Indistinct chatter beneath the pub. “I should have guessed the moment you sounded like a frog crawling up your throat.”
“ You've got any?” I spat before he could pull up further banter.
“Um, a minute, please.” He chomped and silence stretched between us like he was making a quick enquiry. “A popular hockey captain in the Red Bull club needs a female assistant and the pay is huge.”
My jaw dropped practically. Who would not want to be a female assistant to any hockey players in the Red Bull club?
The Red Bull club was Marcus's former club— the strongest and richest hockey team in Westbridge.
The club was full of horny and p*****t hockey players and yet girls still fell for each other. Here in Westbridge academy, girls who dated any hockey players in the Red Bull club were often called the big girls of the school.
Marcus Morgan was once a team mate in the Red Bull club just before his captain, Ryker Knox; the hottest, bad boy hockey captain of the club started wooing me.
But I had secretly turned him down because the only cockroach in my cupboard was Marcus Morgan— The orphan boy I had loved and sacrificed for so dearly.
Ryker was driven by jealousy and pride , swore to ruin Marcus' uprising career in the Red Bull club.
“Every girl would take a bullet to be by my side and you rejected me? Your boyfriend, Marcus's career is at stake.”
Ryker had once threatened and because of the love I have for Marcus, I rather help him start afresh in a less recognised club—Eastern Europe team, where he later became popular as a goalie.
Plus, every girls, including me crushed on Ryker knox, however, Scarlet's love for him was a pure obsession. She wanted him badly and that was the reason why she contested for the Westbridge's Queen position, just maybe he would consider her, but she was just a f**k mate to him, nothing more, nothing less.
But now I would not mind being a maid in the club as much as I would not remain in Marcus's ridiculous apartment.
My face drained as Kevin's statement replayed in my head. “Wait, did you just say a popular hockey captain of the Red Bull club?”
“Yes, Riley. That's a hot cake and an opportunity for girls to give luck a try. I would send you a link to apply directly. Good luck.”
I gasped, wide-eyed as the realization pressed heavily on me like a heavy brick that I thought I'd lost my voice.
Ryker Knox, my ex-boyfriend's rival and former admirer, was the same person looking for a female assistant.
I bit my lower lips and tilted my head sideways in contemplation. I had no other options but to apply for it.
Shutting my eyes, I tapped on the sent link and it directed me to a page. Over two thousands girls had applied in just an hour.
I gasped over the tremendous odds. How could I be noticed and picked among these numerous bitches who obviously wanted themselves on Ryker’s bed?
I strode back inside the room to let Marcus know that to secure a decent job out there is costly and no other chances of survival. I would rather do whatever they wanted to survive for the meantime.
But as I strode back inside the room Marcus and Scarlet were on the bed kissing, my words choking in my throat. “ I'm ready to do whatever you want until I could afford an apartment—”
“ It's too late. We've changed our minds. Your presence now taints the air we breathe. You should start packing already.”
