My mind raced as I backed away from the staircase. Every instinct screamed for me to grab Lily and get out of the house, but my feet felt glued to the floor. The sound of shattering glass echoed in my ears, growing louder with each beat of my panicked heart.
Who was in my home? And what did they want?
I tightened my grip on my phone, my thumb hovering over the screen. Should I call the police? What if I overreacted and it was nothing more than an animal or a freak accident?
But the shadow I’d seen was no accident.
I swallowed hard, creeping back down the hallway to Lily’s room. My first priority had to be her. I quietly opened her door, peeking inside. She was still sound asleep, her small chest rising and falling steadily under the blanket.
