The moment I heard Lily’s voice, I turned backwards and saw her running towards me, I scooped her up in a tight hug, my voice a mix of worry and frustration.
“Lily! Where did you wander off to? You scared me!” I said as I lowered my knee down to her eye level.
She looked down, a shy smile creeping onto her face. “I’m sorry, Mommy,” she murmured, her fingers fidgeting with a small flower she held in her hand. “I didn’t mean to make you worried.”
A wave of tenderness washed over me. And I thought to myself, “How could I be upset when she looked at me like that?” I brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. “Just promise me you won’t go wandering off again, okay?”
