Chapter 2

I sighed and gave his food to him. He ate quietly until he was finished and I took the plates out of the room. Caine is very reserved. I get that he’s not happy with where he is right now but he needs to let people in. I met Maureen downstairs and she looked at the plates in my hand. “Wow, he finished the whole plate.” She looked like she had just heard the best news of her life. I was a bit confused but I didn’t ask any questions. “Is there anything I need to give Caine after his lunch?” I asked Maureen. “No dear, since the doctor is coming today… Oh! He’s here already.” She said as she heard the front doors open and the butler exchanging greetings with someone. “Here’s his daily schedule for drugs.” She said, handing me a small tablet with its pen. “Everything you need to know about Caine’s routine is there.” Maureen and I went up to Caine’s room. We met the doctor at Caine’s door. “Ahh! You must be the new nurse.” He said bringing out his hand to shake me. “Maureen.” He greeted. I shook his hand and he asked us to wait outside while he attended to Caine. “I’ll show you to your room,” Maureen said and I followed her to the room across the hall from Caine’s room. My bag was already in the room so I got to unpacking. The room was big. But not as massive as Caine’s. It was already dark out and Maureen told me I could have the night to myself while she attended to Caine. I quickly got ready for bed, spoke to my mom, and called it a night. •~•~••~•~•~•~~••~•~••~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~~••~•~• I got up very early and freshened up. Quickly checking the tablet for Caine’s schedule then I made my way to his room. He was awake. “Good morning… sir” I didn’t know what to address him as. I got his pills ready and left the room to get his breakfast. Two girls dressed in uniform helped me with the trays of food and we headed back up the stairs. I had not seen Evelyn or Maureen this morning. The girls dropped the food and left the room. I didn’t want to watch him eat so I went to the study on the other side of his room. I picked a random book to read and waited until I felt like he was done eating. I called the girls again and they came into the room. I helped him freshen up and get into the wheelchair again. “We should go out. Maybe you could show me around the mansion.” He didn’t reply so I took that as a yes. I wheeled him out of the room and into the stairlift and waited for him to get down the stairs. We bumped into Maureen. “Come dear, let me introduce you to the junior staff members.” She said, “Oh..” I didn’t want to leave Caine but it looked like he had other plans. He used the controls on his wheelchair and left our sight. Maureen led me to the kitchen where a bunch of people stood side by side in a line. They all straightened up when they saw us walk in. “This is Elissa, she is the Master’s new nurse and you all will assist her in any way you can.” There threatened to be a murmur but Maureen’s warning look shut it down immediately. She turned to me, “If there’s any problem at all, just let me know.” Then she looked back at them, “I trust that there will be no issues at all.” With that, she dismissed them. “Elissa dear, you should take Caine to the garden, he’s been in that room for too long,” Maureen said. “Okay, I just have to find where he has gone,” I said to Maureen. “The living room.” She said, chuckling to herself. I went into the living room and he was there. He was looking at some pictures on the table. I decided to look at the pictures on the other side of the room. I got hold of the very first family portrait. It looked like Caine’s dad since I could tell it was Evelyn and Caine by his side. Caine looked just like his dad. With his brown eyes and his shoulder length brown hair. I think I’ll give him a haircut later. “Should we head to the garden now sir?” I said, breaking the silence. Caine turned his chair to face me, “Caine.” He corrected me. I nodded slowly. So he could speak! He let me steer him on. We went through the front door, passed the fountain, and through a narrow road that had perfectly cut bushes on each side. It was almost a five minute walk. Then we got to a short iron gate painted white. I looked at Caine and he gave me a go-ahead to open the small gates. I was met with an open space that looked like a private chamber, filled with different flowers and trees decorated around. There was a little area that had fruits and vegetables. Beautiful. I was in awe. “Whoa, this is so beautiful,” I said, leaving Caine behind and walking up to the flowers, sniffing them one after the other. I noticed Caine watching me but I didn’t mind him. I squatted and picked a lily, turning back to look at Caine. “Aren’t they so pretty?” I gushed, “They’re my favorite.” Caine tapped on the controls on his wheelchair and pushed the lever, taking him to the swing benches. “Would you like to sit on the bench?” I asked him in a pleading tone. “I’m fine here.” He said. I sighed and sat on the swing bench, swinging it lightly as I opened up my tote bag to drop the flower. “What’s your favorite flower?” “I have none,” Caine replied. I searched through my bag and brought out the tablet. “It says here that I don’t need to massage you and in a few hours, we should be inside for lunch.” “What would you like to have for lunch?” I asked him, trying to make small conversation. “Anything Maureen gives me is fine.” He shut me off immediately. “Well, Maureen has handed that power to me,” I said to him, grinning. “So if you don’t make a choice, then I’ll ask them to make you hospital food.” I know no one would like that so he was bound to say something. Caine sighed like he was already tired of me. I looked up to see Caine’s room window. I turned to him, slowing down my pace on the swing. “What do you do for…” I snapped my neck back at the sound of the garden gates opening.
