Chapter 4

I saw enough to get her scolded for deliberately breaking all those plates, but I had no evidence, and Caine wasn’t watching. I gave her a hand. “Are you alright?” “Yes, yes I’m fine, let me clean this up quickly.” Jane’s eyes quickly filled up with tears. “No, just go get yourself cleaned up dear, I’ll get this tidied up.” I started picking up the broken glass. “Sssth..” A tiny piece cut into my finger and got stuck. “Are you okay?” Cain said in shock as he saw blood dripping on the floor. “Come here.” I quietly got up and walked to him. He looked at my finger as the blood dripped into his palm. “Let’s go use the first aid kit in my bathroom.” My index finger was bleeding so much from that one little cut. I started panicking. I hated seeing blood on myself but I could treat dozens of bleeding patients. The cut was tiny but very painful. Caine brought out a pair of tweezers and slowly removed the glass piece from my finger. He got out the ointment and looked at me wearily, “This is gonna hurt a bit.” Then he poured the liquid on my finger. I bit my tongue and squeezed his arm to stop myself from screaming. Caine rang the bell and got two more staff members to clean up the mess outside his door quickly. “Don’t strain this hand today,” Caine advised. “I’ll manage,” I told him honestly. He let go of my hand and turned his wheelchair to face the window. It was like he was telling me to leave him and I did just that. “Thank you, Caine,” I said as I closed the door behind me. I checked my tab for his afternoon pills and I noticed that from his last checkup until now, he has been repeating the same drugs despite no improvement. I didn’t read much into it since it was the doctor's prescription. I just needed to do my work and help Caine heal properly and then I’ll leave. ~•~•~•~•~••~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~~•~••~•~•~•~•~~•~••~•~•~•~ I came into Caine’s room with Jane for his lunch. She dropped the tray and left quickly. I got out the pills and noticed Caine looked different. I massaged his leg like it was written on the tablet and it looked like he was numb throughout. When I was done, I called Jane in to grab the tray then made my way to his study. I needed to keep an eye on him this time. I noticed he got weak very often and it was due to a particular pill, I just hadn’t figured out which one yet or why he was given that. I got the book I was reading the last time and opened it to continue from where I stopped. “Do you want to go to the garden again?” He shook his head no. “Fine,” I said. I got distracted with my thoughts as I started thinking about my salary in a few days. It was almost payday. I spoke to my mom last night and she was so excited. We agreed that the money would be paid to her account and she’d settle all the pending loans we had. Caine’s voice brought me out of my thoughts. “Don’t you have something else to do?” He asked me. “No, I’m staying here with you until I’m sure you’re okay.” I meant what I said. He looked awfully weak and I’ve been noticing his morning illness and as the afternoon goes by, he just becomes so weak. I got a note earlier to document his progress and to properly make research on the drugs that the doctor keeps giving him. Maybe that was the cause of his weaknesses. He sighed at my response and asked me to get him the book from his study table. “Should I read to you?” I asked him cheerfully. “You don’t have to.” He said grumpily. “I want to.” I began reading from where he left a black bookmark. I read until my mouth hurt and Caine was fast asleep. I’m sure he slept off because he was weak. The book was quite interesting. I had to wait and watch him until dinner time. I slept off. I got up with my neck hurting and my legs sore from sleeping on the lounge chair. Caine was still fast asleep. When his dinner came, I had to wake him up to eat. His eyes were barely open so I fed him. Spoon after spoon, he ate hungrily. I helped him into the wheelchair and we headed to the en-suite. I did my usual routine with him and got him into the bath. I wiped his body clean and got him out quickly. As I was putting on his pyjama shirt, his head rested on my chest. I didn’t like how Caine looked, I think I'll look into his drugs. I was about to lift his head and wheel him back into the room but he held onto me with the little strength he had. “Why am I like this?” He said, sadness filled his voice. My breath caught in my throat. I didn’t know what to say to him. “Am I useless?” He sounded so helpless. “You’re not useless Caine, look at me.” I held his face up. “You’ll get past this. You’ve been strong and I know you will continue to be strong. I’m here for you, I promise, you’ll get past this.” His face fell on my shoulder. I felt so bad for Caine. I have to do whatever it takes to help him walk again. I took him to the room and helped him into bed. His eyes were already shut waiting for the lights to be turned off. I hadn't left his room since lunch so I tidied up the study and the bed area and turned off the lights. I heard Caine’s faint voice. I stopped in my tracks and turned. “Please stay.” He mumbled in his sleep. I turned to the door, ignoring his sleep talk. “Please, Elle,” he said. I turned to catch him staring at me with heavy eyes. I sighed and got in bed with him. I lay on the outer part of the bed, almost falling off. I stared at the ceiling for a while before turning to my side and putting out the bedside lamp. He just needs to know I'm here with him. I understood that. I'll leave immediately he sleeps off.
