After what felt like an hour, I slowly got off the bed and looked back at Caine once more before leaving the room and shutting the door quietly.
My heart was beating out of my chest in fear.
What if someone was watching me?
I was lucky the whole mansion was asleep and I was sure no one had seen me.
I didn't want to give off the wrong impression of someone catching me coming out of Caine's room so late.
I got into my room and headed to the bathroom to get ready for bed. When I was done, I got under my covers and fell asleep immediately.

It was finally the day.
I got up and went to the bathroom to get ready for the day. Last night's events crossed my mind and my mind went to Caine again.
I couldn't help but think of him.
I was brushing my teeth when the notification came in.
I almost ignored it.
Then I saw the sender.
I rinsed my mouth and dried my hands quickly then I opened the message.
The amount stared back at me for a moment before my mind caught up. I read it again. Then a third time.
I leaned against the counter.
It wasn't a mistake. It was for me.
I forwarded the alert to my mother without thinking, followed by a short message:
Check your account.
She called less than a minute later, her voice shaking. "Elissa... are you sure this is for us?"
"Yes," I said. "Pay the loans. All of them."
There was silence on the line, then a sound that was half laughter, half sob.
By the time I ended the call, the house felt different.
This was unreal. This was more than I could get in a year.
I went into Caine's room to check on him after last night. I acted normally like nothing just happened and as though nothing also happened last night.
He was awake in bed, his eyes looking out the window.
“Good morning, Caine.” He looked at me, trying to read something on my face. His look was calculating and stern.
I looked away, checking the tablet in my hand and bringing out his pills for the day. “I hope you slept well?”
He looked away from me.
“I didn't. But I feel much better, thanks to you,” he said.
I paused. He remembered last night.
“Anytime Caine. No need to thank me, it's my job.”
He frowned at me.
“You did more than your job yesterday, Elle, I'm grateful,” he said, ending the conversation.
He called my name. Caine said my name.
This is the most I have heard him speak. Ever.
I smiled at him faintly and got him ready for the day.
Caine seemed a bit uneasy today, I couldn’t tell why.
It looked like something was bothering him so much that he let it show on his face.
Then it clicked.
How could I forget? Today was the day of his monthly check-up.
I went down the stairs to check on Caine’s breakfast, then I heard the butler letting someone in but I didn’t bother to see who it was.
Jane and I headed up the stairs with Caine’s breakfast. She dropped it and left the room.
Just as Caine was rounding up his meal, a knock came from outside the door.
I opened the door and stared at the short, thick man. He walked past me and into the room with his briefcase in hand.
“Goodday sir,” I greeted him quietly.
“You may leave us.” He said to me, swatting his hand.
I was a bit confused but I obeyed him anyway.
Over 15 minutes had gone by and the doctor hadn’t come out yet.
After a long while, I had lost count of how long he had been there. Then he walked out, “Come in, miss.”
“Where are my manners?” He chuckled, bringing out his hand for a handshake. “I am Dr. Lane. I’m sure we’d get along well.”
I shook his hand, “Elissa, sir”
I didn’t see the need to be familiar with him. And my instincts didn’t sit right with him.
“Here are the pills you’ll add to his morning routine. These green ones are once daily and the red ones will be strictly before breakfast.”
I held them in her hands, noticing that they had removed the cards of the drugs and put them in a customized hospital drug bag.
My face was filled with dissatisfaction but I masked it immediately, smiling and nodding at the doctor.
“But sir, what are these for? His current pills are still not finished yet and I noticed that he gets very weak in the mornings...”
He stiffened at what I said, “Just give them to him. I have observed his morning pills and illness and I have added some pills for it.” He cut me off in a warning tone.
I recognized those green pills but couldn’t put a name to them. I remember how I gave them to a patient in nursing school but I couldn’t remember what for.
I had failed the country’s national nursing exams 3 years ago and my mother later found out that they had given my scores to someone else who paid massively for it.
There was nothing they could do so I had to go work at the clinic around my house. I planned on taking the exams again after the 5-year gap.
I’ve always wanted to own a hospital and my mom was my biggest supporter.
I smiled at the doctor once more before opening the room door for him to leave.
I sat down on the bedside examining Caine’s features. He was fast asleep. But how?
I brushed the hair off his face and got up quickly.
I went to the waste bin at the corner of the room and emptied it. Luckily I found the injection needle with the bottle he got the drug from.
These were sleeping pills. They would only make Caine weak and unable to move around for a long period of time.
I got out the tablet and took notes of these changes. I checked the drugs that the doctor gave me and put them down to take a closer look at them in my spare time.
I didn’t know what I was getting into but I know that this doctor was fully aware of what was going on. And someone was behind all this madness. Someone didn’t want Caine to recover.
