A few weeks had passed and Caine was still his usual cold self. He had gotten much better after his last month's checkup.
I came into his room earlier today to get the day started and take him out to the garden but the weather had other plans.
“Morning Caine!” I was in a very good mood this morning for some reason.
I started pulling the curtains to let the light in. “I trust you slept well.” He ignored me as he watched me go into the bath to pick out fresh clothes for him to put on for the day.
My voice followed me into the bathroom and back out.
“I like how well you have improved these past few days. Maybe if I keep the massages coming daily, you will gain movement to your toes at least.” I said.
I helped him sit up, adjusting the pillows behind his back, moving around him like it was any other morning.
After warming up his bath, I helped him into his wheelchair and took him to the bathroom. I left him to tend to himself until he was done then I helped him put on his clothes.
“It's really freezing outside.” I said. “I don't think we can go to the garden today, I really wanted us to go out there for a while.”
He didn't respond.
“I guess it's just you and me today,” I said as I went to call in his breakfast.
“You should eat properly today,” I said. “Yesterday you barely touched your food, and if you keep skipping meals..”
“Stop.”
My hands froze mid-motion.
“What?” I asked, confused.
“You’ve been talking since you walked in,” he said flatly. "I need quiet.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” I said quickly. “I didn’t realize…”
“Leave.”
The word hit harder than I expected.
“But your food isn't here yet,” I said. “Let me at least..”
A knock came through the door and Jane walked in with his food.
The room fell silent.
She dropped it and walked out of the room.
“Just go away.” He continued, turning his face away.
I nodded, cheeks hot, grabbed my bag, and left immediately.
I walked into Jane waiting outside the room. She looked me up and down and stood in my way, folding her arms.
I was shocked by this new character of hers.
“You talk too much,” she said. “And I see the way you’re always around him. Learn your place.”
I took a deep breath. “I’m just doing my job,” I said, calm.
She leaned closer, her voice dropping. “Quit your job. Now. Or I’ll make sure you regret staying.”
I blinked. Then I laughed. Not loudly, just a short, incredulous laugh.
“Excuse me?” I said. “So you think I'll just quit because you said so?”
“Do you want me to show you how serious I am? Or do you want me to make you quit?” she seethed.
I couldn't believe what was going on right now. Was this real? Was little Jane threatening me?
I smiled, tipping my head slightly. “No, I get it. You think you can scare me. Cute. But seriously, you don’t intimidate me. Caine isn’t yours, and I’m not leaving.”
“Try to focus on your job and stay out of mine,” I said
She froze for a second, then stepped back. “You’re… bold.”
“I try,” I said, and walked past her without another word.
After that, I changed.
I went down to look for Maureen. I didn't want to tell her about Jane, not yet. I saw her in the kitchen and asked if I could keep her company and she was delighted.
I stayed almost the whole day in the kitchen with her and we made dinner together.
Evelyn came down for dinner and announced that Lucien would be arriving soon.
Caine wasn't in the mood to come down for dinner so Jane took his food up to him. He never came down when Lucien was around. Did he hate his uncle?
It felt like he was visiting too often now. Whenever he came in, it just felt weird. Like he owned the place. Evelyn was always quiet around him, her responses were always calculated to his questions.
At about 7pm, his car pulled into the driveway again.
I felt a flicker of irritation as I watched him walk through the front door.
“Back so soon?” Jane muttered under her breath, not loud enough for him to hear.
“I hope I’m not interrupting,” he said casually, voice soft, but there was a tilt in his tone that suggested it was more a statement than a question.
Everyone greeted him and so did I.
I didn't want to join them for dinner and it already felt like Evelyn was about to ask me to.
I was so grateful when none of them asked me to join them for dinner.
I helped Maureen and Jane serve dinner. Lucien walked in and chose his spot at the head of the table as usual.
Jane and I gave each other a knowing look as he sat down.
She knew something was up but it was like no one wanted to speak on it.
I needed to know what was going on in this place. Why did it seem like Lucien had more authority than Evelyn who was the owner of the house?
I stayed with Maureen in the kitchen until they were done with dinner.
After what felt like an hour, Lucien finally left and Evelyn went up to her room.
I helped them clean up despite Maureen’s protests.
After my dinner, I went up to assist Caine for his night routine.
I had the tablet with me so I laid out his pills on the tray and dropped his water for him.
I didn't speak to him. Not even a greeting or a goodnight. I was quiet throughout.
I helped him get ready for bed and fluffed his pillows before turning off the lights and leaving him alone.
He didn't say anything to me. He just watched me throughout. I was already used to him staring at me while I moved around his room but this time was different. He knew something was off but his pride wouldn't let him do anything about it.
I went back to my room and took a quick shower. I called my mom and we spoke for a few minutes before I brought out the book I took from Caine’s study to read.
I couldn't keep up anymore so I closed the book and put it on my dresser, turning off my bedside lamp, I called it a night.
