Chapter 7

My morning went by in a blur. I stopped wasting time in Caine's room. I did some research and found out that the doctor had been giving him muscle relaxants. I couldn’t tell what the other pill was yet but a friend of mine from the clinic was going to help me out. For a week now, I wasn’t giving him those particular pills and he hasn’t been experiencing those sudden weaknesses. I needed to speak to Evelyn about this. I started spending more time with Maureen in the kitchen. Most days Evelyn would show up and then she'd head back to her room again. Jane was happy because I wasn't spending time with Caine like I used to. I went down to the kitchen but Maureen wasn't there. “Well if it isn't the annoying nurse,” Jane said. I rolled my eyes and left the kitchen. I wasn't going to deal with this today. Jane had already served Caine's breakfast so I went up to give his drugs to him. I walked in, pulled back the curtains and went to adjust pillows. I asked if he wanted a bath this cold morning and he nodded yes. I signed. Now I have to stay with him for more than 30 minutes. I went to warm up his bath and his eyes followed me until I entered his bathroom. Caine didn't want to say anything. It was like he spoke with his eyes. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and I helped him sit in his wheelchair. I was used to his body weight by now and it didn't seem weird anymore. The water felt warm enough for a dip so I assisted him into the tub. He asked me to be with him so he wouldn't be alone there and I couldn't decline. I stayed silent throughout and waited for him to clean himself up. When he was done, I took him back to the room and put on his clothes before walking out of the room. After his outburst, I didn't feel comfortable speaking to him anymore. I didn't feel comfortable saying anything around him at all. I went downstairs in search of Maureen. She wasn't in the kitchen earlier this morning so I decided to check again. Maureen was in the kitchen making some bread rolls. “I didn't see you this morning.” I said. “Oh dear, you scared me,” she said, laughing lightly. “I was with Evelyn this morning.” “How is the master doing?” she asked me. “He has been in better condition than the past few weeks.” I said. “There is no physical improvement, but healthwise, he has been well.” Maureen smiled at that. “Why isn’t anyone here with you?” I asked, “don’t you need help making this many pastries?” “I prefer making all the bread on my own.” Maureen said. “The master only likes the bread I make, so I have to make a lot and store them. That’s why I don’t ask anyone to prepare them for me.” “Okay then,” I said. “That’s fine, if you need me, I’m just one call away.” She smiled at me and continued with her dough. “But there is something I can't seem to understand.” I continued, “whenever Mr. Lucien comes, Caine never wants to be around him.” “It’s like he is avoiding him.” Maureen’s smile disappeared. “Elissa, my dear, why don't you ask Caine about this?” I nodded and muttered under my breath. “I rather go speak with Jane than with Caine right now.” I asked Maureen if she needed any help and she declined so I went to the living room to catch up on social media. I put on the television to keep myself busy until it was time to give Caine his lunch medication. By lunch time, I came in late. Caine was fast asleep when I walked into his room. I tapped him lightly once. No movement. I tapped him again but this time calling his name softly. His eyes opened. I brought the pills to him this time and gave him the water bottle and he took them and thanked me before shutting his eyes once more. That was my cue to leave. I went back to the living room to continue my novel, then I fell asleep on the couch. “Elissa…” I heard my name faintly in my sleep. I heard it again and slowly opened my eyes. It was Maureen. “You should go to bed, I'll handle Caime for tonight.” Maureen said, smiling sadly at me. “You must be tired.” “No, no..” I stopped her. “It’s fine Maureen, I've had enough sleep for the day.” “You can go on with your night, I have already attended to Caine and he is fast asleep.” She said, walking out of the room. I rubbed my eyes and looked out the window. It was already dark outside. How long did I sleep? I checked the time and it was 11:31pm. It's almost midnight. The sleep had gone away from my eyes so I put on the tv to watch a movie. I wasn't hungry so I didn't bother Maureen for the night. A few minutes into my movie, I heard footsteps. I paused the tv and waited a while. The footsteps became louder as the person got nearer. I held my breath as I waited for the person to walk into the parlor. Evelyn walked in. She was dressed in a silk night dress and a robe over it. She looked very tired, like she hadn't gotten any sleep for a while. “Hi, how have you been?” I said walking up to her. “I haven’t heard from you in days.” I gave her a hug and we sat down on the couch together. “I’ve been well.” She said, “How has Caine been?” “Caine has been okay. He has been his usual self, not talking to anyone and brooding.” I said. Evelyn chuckled. “I was about to grab a drink, do you mind?” She asked me. “I don’t mind, in fact, that’s what I need right now.” We both laughed as she walked to the mini bar at the edge of the room to grab a bottle and two glasses. She almost filled up her cup as I played my movie. “You know, Caine used to love watching movies down here,” she started. “He loved moving around, going to golf with his father…” she paused and took a sip. I could tell talking about her husband was hard for her. “How long has it been?” I asked rather quietly. Evelyn’s fingers stilled. “Since…?” “Your husband,” I said, softly. Not prying. Evelyn swallowed. For a moment, I thought she wouldn’t answer. Then she exhaled, long and shaky. I held her hand and rubbed it lightly, urging her to keep going. She cleared her throat to speak before we heard a loud scream.
