The grand ballroom sparkled beneath crystal chandeliers as the city's wealthiest families gathered for the Lancaster Foundation Gala.
Specioza Tracy adjusted the simple navy-blue dress Oliver had insisted she wear. It wasn't extravagant, but it made her feel confident.
"You look beautiful," Oliver said quietly.
She smiled. "Thank you."
Before he could say anything else, a familiar voice interrupted.
"So... this is the woman everyone is talking about."
They turned.
A stunning woman in a silver gown walked toward them with effortless confidence. Her sharp eyes never left Oliver.
"Vanessa," Oliver said, his expression hardening.
Tracy noticed the tension immediately.
Vanessa offered a graceful smile. "It's been a long time."
Oliver nodded. "What are you doing here?"
"I was invited." Her gaze shifted to Tracy. "And you must be Specioza Tracy."
Tracy extended her hand politely.
Vanessa ignored it.
"I've heard so much about you."
There was something unsettling about the way she said it.
Oliver stepped closer to Tracy.
"If you have something to say, say it to me."
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Oh, Oliver... you still think you can protect everyone."
She leaned toward Tracy.
"Did he tell you why our engagement ended?"
Tracy froze.
Engagement?
She slowly looked at Oliver.
"You were engaged?"
Oliver sighed.
"It was years ago. It wasn't real—it was arranged by our families."
Vanessa's smile widened.
"That's one version of the story."
Before anyone could respond, the host walked onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we are honored to announce a new partnership between Lancaster Holdings and the Sterling Group."
Applause filled the room.
Then the giant screen behind the stage flickered.
Instead of the company presentation...
A medical report appeared.
At the top, in bold letters, was Tracy's name.
And beneath it...
CONFIDENTIAL – PREGNANCY TEST: POSITIVE
The ballroom fell into stunned silence.
Tracy's face drained of color.
She hadn't told anyone.
