Sophia stood motionless outside Alexander's office, the folder clutched tightly in her trembling hands.
From inside, she could hear voices.
"...she must never find out the truth," an unfamiliar man said.
Alexander replied in a cold, measured tone, "I'm keeping my promise. But if anyone tries to hurt Sophia again, they will answer to me."
Sophia's heart skipped a beat.
What truth?
Before she could gather her thoughts, the office door suddenly opened.
Alexander stepped out and immediately noticed the pallor in her face.
"Sophia... how long have you been standing there?"
She forced a smile. "I just came to deliver these documents."
His sharp eyes searched hers, sensing that something was wrong.
"Did you hear anything?"
She shook her head, though a flicker of guilt crossed her face.
"I didn't hear much."
Alexander remained unconvinced, but he allowed her to leave.
---
That evening, Sophia could not stop thinking about the conversation.
She opened the old locket her late mother had left her.
Something rattled inside.
Confused, she pressed the back of the locket until a tiny hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
With shaking hands, she unfolded it.
"If you're reading this, your life has been built on lies. Trust Alexander Kingston. He promised to protect you."
Her eyes widened.
"Mom..."
Just then, her phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
When she answered, a distorted voice whispered,
"If you want to stay alive, stop trusting Alexander."
The call ended immediately.
Sophia looked out the window, unaware that a black car was parked across the street.
Someone was watching her every move.
Inside the car, a woman smiled coldly.
"So... the game has finally begun."
