Misty sat back from her keyboard. It was almost 5 and Denice popped her head in the office door.
“Hey sweetie, how was your first day?”
“Oh, it has been wonderful, thank you for all the help.” She smiled as the older woman leaned against the door frame.
“Good, I was just going to let you know. I am heading out for the day. Tomorrow, I will get you set up as the main point of contact for Mr. Hale, and have his line forwarded to your desk. It will be nice to have a break. If you need anything please just let me know.”
“Yes ma’am, and thank you again.”
Denice left the office and the floor was basically silent except for the hum of computers and the AC. She was such a sweet woman. She had told Misty all about her children and her husband. She had been excited that she didn’t have to stay late now that there was someone to split the work with.
Misty stood up to stretch, feeling the muscles in her shoulders begin to loosen as she did. She looked around and picked up the stack of files that Mr. Hale had asked her to bring him a few minutes ago.
Her heels clicked down the empty hall, and she gently knocked on the door.
“Enter,” the usual gruff voice answered. What was it about a man with a deep voice that always made her feel a little flustered?
Gregg Hale was even hotter in person than his pictures online, but she didn’t need to focus on that. He was her boss and she was not interested in an office romance. She had to be by the book all the way, or it would risk her chances at her career. She couldn’t let her reputation be tarnished like that.
That didn’t mean that she couldn’t think about her hot boss when she was alone in her bed at night.
“I have the files you requested.”
“Put them here.” Mr. Hale pointed to the side of his desk.
Misty placed them on the corner and as she did, she bumped his coffee cup with the edge of the folders. Before she knew it, they were both grabbing the coffee mug and making it tip further. Unfortunately, it was too late. The coffee was all over the desk and down the front of Gregg Hale’s shirt.
Misty immediately rushed to the bathroom off the office and grabbed a towel. Without thinking, she started mopping up the coffee on his shirt and apologizing.
“Oh my god, Mr. Hale, I am so sorry. I am such a clutz. I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to…”
Before she knew what was happening, he had grabbed her hand. “Ms. Edwards, please stop.”
His eyes had almost gone black, and Misty couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but he was looking at her like a lion looked at its prey. She stopped and realized she was leaning over him with her hand pressed against his chest and the other on the arm of his chair. Coffee was still dripping from the edge of the desk.
Misty cleared her suddenly dry throat, “Oh, yes, I..I’m sorry…I, um, I will get a towel and clean the desk.”
“No, I think you have done enough for now.”
‘Stupid girl, how can you land a great job, and f**k it up all in one day? He knows you don’t belong here. He knows you are trash. You should have never left Alabama. You should be there with your mother. You are no better than her or her problems. You deserve to get fired.’
“Yes, sir.” Misty turned to walk away, but Mr. Hale stopped her as she was turning to leave.
“I would like to ask you how your first day went.” He was dabbing at the desk with the towel when she turned back to face him.
“Oh, it was wonderful.” She smiled shyly.
“Good to hear. Denice said you had done well, and she is going to turn over the more intricate parts of the job to you in the upcoming days. Being my assistant isn’t easy, so be forewarned, it may be a little daunting.”
“Yes, sir, but it isn’t anything I can’t handle.”
He smiled as he stood and walked to the bathroom. He came out dabbing his shirt with a damp towel. She could see his chiseled stomach through the wet material of his shirt. God, she wanted to touch him just to feel how hard his stomach was. ‘He wouldn’t want you. You are too young, too big. Just give up on that thought.’ Misty’s stomach sank.
“I will head back to my office, unless you need anything else.” Misty could have sworn his eyes grew darker when she said that.
“No Ms. Edwards, I do believe that will be all for the day. Please, go home and get some rest. I will see you in the morning.”
