Samantha froze in her tracks, her heart pounding. She clung to the tray she was holding, trying to hide her nerves.
But the slight tremor in her body betrayed her anxiety, causing a flicker of displeasure in Clayton’s eyes.
He lounged on the couch, legs crossed, and asked in a low voice, “Am I that scary? Your hands are shaking”
Turning her head. Samantha clenching her hands tightly, she mumbled, “It’s my first time serving such a distinguished guest, I’m a
bit nervous. Hope you understand. "
Seeing her still looking scared, Clayton averted his eyes. Maybe he was just too tired lately. There was no way this woman could be “ Vanessa.”
He waved her away, and Samantha scurried out the back door without hesitation. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, finally relaxing a bit.
He didn’t recognize her, thank god….
In the living room, Clayton watched her hurriedly retreating figure, his eyes growing even darker, “Does the Collins family have a cherry blossom tree?”
“Yes, it’s in the backyard.” Issac answered.
Indeed, in the perpetually shaded yard of Samantha ’s home, there was a cherry blossom tree.
Clayton nodded.
Just then, a pleasant female voice rang out, “Mr. Ferguson ”
Clayton looked up. Vanessa, dressed in a light pink dress, her face adorned with delicate makeup, was helping her mother, Gloria, down the stairs.
Leading the way was her father, Edith. “Mr. Ferguson, sorry to keep you waiting! What brings you here today?”
Clayton’s gaze fell on Penelope, “I’m here today to discuss my engagement with Ms. Collins.”
Engagement?
Everyone was stunned, Vanessa most of all. So this was Clayton’s explanation!
Christopher and Leah, already aware of their daughter’s predicament from last night, exchanged a joyful glance.
In just two days, the news of Clayton’s engagement to Vanessa had spread throughout Northfield, with media outlets reporting left and
right.
Vanessa suddenly found herself in the spotlight.
Elsewhere, in the kitchen, Issac threw a list of ingredients in front of Samantha , ordering her to finish before she went to bed.
Samantha knew very well that she was deliberately making things difficult for her.
The Ferguson family was visiting tomorrow, and the Collinshad been busy all afternoon. But she had been late because her mother was sick and she had to take her to the hospital.
It wasn’t until 11 pm that Samantha finally finished all her tasks. She closed the kitchen door, ready to go home, only to run into Vanessa returning from outside.
Before she could say anything,Venessa's face darkened. She strode past and slapped her hard across the face.
Samantha felt a sting on her cheek, and her heart, which had been on edge all day, started racing again.
Was Vanessa so angry because Clayton had recognized her during the day?
“Why aren’t you wearing a mask!”
Vanessa shouted angrily at Samantha. She couldn’t stand the sight of her lowly servant having a face similar to hers. She wished she could rip Samantha’s face apart!–
Samantha clenched her fists tightly, her hands trembling slightly, but in the end, she let go.
She was relieved that the butler didn’t find out about it. Otherwise, both she and her mother would be kicked out of the Collins family, and her mother’s illness would become incurable.
“If I see you again, I swear I’ll scratch your face!” Vanessa threatened fiercely. It was infuriating that Samantha, a servant who didn’t even care about her skin, had a more delicate face than hers, despite her using expensive skincare products every day!
And Samantha was also the woman who spent the night with Clayton! This lowly creature was a curse!
Vanessa glared at Samantha. Her eyes were filled with disgust, like a snake wanting to devour her.
Suddenly, Vanessa’s phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, her face immediately softened. As she answered the phone, she walked upstairs, her voice sweet, “Clayton, I’m still awake…”
Only then did Samantha breathe a sigh of relief. She quickly fled home. Was Clayton’s call a lifeline indirectly saving her? Otherwise, Vanessa would continue ranting at her.
Samantha’s phone rang out of the blue. It was her good friend Daisy.
“Samantha, why did you take so long to answer your phone? I’ve been calling you several times.”
She took a deep breath and replied softly, “Sorry, didn’t hear it. What’s up?”
“Your birthday is the day after tomorrow! Let’s skip class and have fun. You must have a joyful birthday. It’s only once a year!”
Samantha laughed. She had almost forgotten about her birthday due to caring for her mother. It was heartwarming that Daisy remembered.
“Daisy, thank you.”
“No need to thank me, I’ve prepared a gift for you.”
A gift?
Samantha was touched. In this world, only her mother and Daisy remembered her birthday.
After chatting with Daisy for a while, she hung up the phone, rummaged through her bag, and found an agate necklace. She paused.
The necklace was flawless, with a cloud carving on the agate. It was understated yet luxurious.
When did Daisy slip it in? She didn’t notice at all. Samantha hesitated for a moment, then texted Daisy. [I found the gift. I love it. Thank you, Daisy.]
After putting down her phone, Samantha hung the necklace around her neck. She didn’t know much about jewelry, but the agate on the necklace was clean and had no impurities.
It must have been expensive.
After thinking for a while, she tucked the necklace into her clothes, feeling much safer. The agate had a warm and smooth touch. She loved it.
The next day, after the morning classes at Willowbrook College, Samantha rushed out of school.
The Fergusons were coming for lunch, and Issac had warned her in a weird tone not to be late, or she and her mother would be kicked out of the Collins family.
As soon as she stepped out of the school gate, a red sports car screeched to a halt next to her.
