Chapter 4

Rain poured harder, washing blood into the cracks of the alley. Elena stood frozen, her father’s words echoing like a death sentence. Your sister was never supposed to survive. Clara whimpered against the wall, pale and trembling. Daniel knelt, restrained by masked men, his eyes blazing with desperation. Marcus lay dazed on the pavement, beaten but breathing. And her father — the man she once trusted — stood like a king in the storm, hand outstretched. “Come with me, Elena,” he said calmly. “It’s time you stop pretending you’re ordinary.” Elena’s throat burned. “Ordinary? I never asked for any of this!” Her father’s expression hardened. “You were born for this. Every moment of your life has led to this choice. Your bloodline belongs to the Council.” Daniel strained against his captors. “Don’t listen! He’s turning you into a weapon, just like Clara!” Clara forced herself upright, pain twisting her face. “He’s lying… he doesn’t want you, Elena. He wants control.” Elena’s pulse thundered. Her father’s hand remained steady, patient. “I want you to see the truth. Step forward, and everything will be revealed.” The masked men tightened their grip on Daniel, forcing him to his knees. His voice cracked. “Elena, I lied to protect you. I should’ve told you everything, but I didn’t want this moment to come. Please. Don’t choose him.” Her father’s eyes flashed with disdain. “And you expect her to choose a traitor? You disobeyed the Council, Daniel. You were meant to deliver both sisters, not fall in love with one.” The words stabbed deeper than any blade. Elena’s body trembled. “So it’s true. You loved Clara, too.” Daniel’s face broke, his silence screaming louder than words. Clara’s weak whisper cut through the rain. “Don’t… don’t believe him. He uses love as a leash.” Her father tilted his head. “And yet she still can’t let go of him. Tell me, Elena, what does that say about you?” Elena clutched her head, dizzy. The world blurred — truth and lies twisting until they felt the same. Her father stepped closer. “One step, Elena. One step, and you’ll finally know why we exist.” Daniel’s roar shook the alley. “Elena! If you take his hand, you’ll lose yourself!” Clara screamed, blood staining her lips. “Don’t do it!” Elena’s breath came fast, ragged. Her hand rose slowly, trembling, toward her father’s. The storm seemed to hush, as if the world held its breath. Her fingers brushed his. And in that instant — a flash seared her mind. Memories that weren’t hers — laboratories, cages, children trained like soldiers, whispers of The Council echoing in endless halls. She saw Clara screaming, Daniel obeying, her father watching without a shred of remorse. She tore her hand back with a scream. “No!” Her father’s face darkened. “So be it.” He snapped his fingers. The masked men lifted their guns. Elena threw herself in front of Clara. “No! Shoot me, and you’ll never have me!” Her father raised his hand, stopping them. His eyes glowed with a sense of pride. “Good. Defiance. That’s what makes you valuable.” Daniel broke free, slamming his captors to the ground. He grabbed Elena’s wrist. “We’re leaving. Now.” Marcus staggered up, bloodied but alive. “There’s a car in the next street—” But before they could move, the woman in black stepped forward, blocking the exit. Her knife gleamed. “No one leaves until she chooses.” Her father’s voice boomed: “Elena belongs to the Council.” Daniel’s voice cracked with desperation: “Elena belongs to herself.” And Clara, barely clinging to life, whispered: “You belong with me, sister… don’t leave me again.” Elena’s world is split into three. Her father’s control. Daniel’s love. Clara’s blood. The storm raged louder, drowning every thought but one: No matter what choice she made, someone she loved would die. The woman in black lunged. The alley exploded into motion. The woman in black slashed her knife toward Daniel’s throat. He barely twisted in time, the blade grazing his cheek. Blood streamed, rain washing it down his jaw. Marcus tackled one masked man, knocking him unconscious, but three more surged forward. Clara collapsed, gasping, every breath sounding like her last. And Elena — torn between three impossible choices — froze in the stormlight, her father’s shadow towering over them all. The woman in black’s voice was sharp, commanding. “No more games. The Council demands her now.” Elena’s father didn’t flinch. “Stand down. She’s not ready.” But the woman laughed, cold and vicious. “You don’t decide anymore. The Council gave me authority. And if you won’t deliver her—” she pressed the blade to Daniel’s chest “—I will.” Daniel’s eyes locked on Elena’s. “Run. Don’t look back.” Her father snapped, “No! Stay. If you run, they’ll never stop hunting you.” Clara whispered, shivering, “Don’t leave me… please.” Elena’s pulse hammered like war drums. She stepped forward. “Stop! If you want me, take me. But no one else dies tonight.” The woman in black smiled beneath her hood. “Good girl.” She lowered the knife, her eyes glinting. “You sound just like your mother.” The words hit like thunder. Elena’s body went rigid. “My… what?” Her father’s face darkened. “Don’t.” But the woman pulled her hood back — revealing sharp cheekbones, familiar green eyes, and hair streaked silver. Elena’s heart nearly stopped. “No… you can’t be—” The woman smirked. “I am. The mother you buried? She never died. He lied to you.” Daniel’s face twisted. “Elena, don’t listen. She’s manipulating you.” Her father’s voice shook with rage. “Enough!” Elena staggered back, the ground tilting beneath her. Memories of her father’s stories about her mother — soft words, tragic tales of loss — all twisted into ash. “You—” Elena’s voice cracked. “You told me she died in an accident.” Her father snarled. “Because she betrayed us! She chose the Council over her family. She abandoned you!” Her mother’s voice cut through, sharp as the blade in her hand. “I saved you, Elena. He raised you in lies. I returned because you’re ready now. The Council is the only truth.” Daniel surged forward. “Elena, don’t—” Her mother’s knife pressed harder against his chest. “One more word, boy, and I’ll end you.” The storm roared. Elena’s scream cut through the night. “STOP!” Lightning split the sky. All eyes turned to her. She felt power rising inside, burning, boiling — something she’d never felt before. Her body trembled as if the storm itself lived in her veins. Her father’s eyes widened. “It’s begun…” Her mother’s smile was chilling. “Yes. She’s awakening.” Daniel whispered, fear mixing with awe. “Elena…” Clara coughed, blood flecking her lips. “Don’t… lose yourself…” Elena’s breath came ragged. For the first time, she felt like her choice could tear the world apart. Her mother’s hand. Her father’s shadow. Daniel’s love. Clara’s fragile life. She raised her hand — and the storm bent with it, thunder cracking as though she commanded the sky. Both her parents stepped forward at once. “Choose me,” her mother whispered. “Choose me,” her father demanded. “Choose yourself,” Daniel pleaded. Elena’s scream shook the night. And then — the storm went black. The world plunged into silence. When Elena opened her eyes, she was alone. No father. No mother. No Daniel. No Clara. Only darkness. And a voice — deep, chilling, unfamiliar. “Welcome, Elena. We’ve been waiting.”
