Meet the team

Clara POV College the next day was a struggle! Just dragging myself out of bed in time and getting dressed was a struggle to be honest, but then as soon as I walked through the front doors (still half asleep) Gia grabbed my arm and dragged me to our favourite spot under the stairs. ‘I do have class you know?’ I said rolling my eyes. She raised an eyebrow- ‘Not for another 10 minutes, and you have a lot to fill me in on.’ ‘More than you know actually’ I said, and proceeded to tell her everything about Johannes, including what he’d done with the police and the potential new job. I’d just about finished when the bell went. Great- now I had to run up the 3 flights of stairs to my first class, arriving out of breath and quite dishevelled! ‘Nearly in time for a late slip Clara’ my maths teacher said with a smirk. I tried not to roll my eyes as I grabbed a seat next to my maths friends. I’m in the advanced maths class, and maths friends are not like normal friends- we mainly just make geeky jokes and barely see each other out of college, so at least I wouldn’t have any explaining to do until break time. I started doodling as Miss Wilson began writing some equations on the board. I don’t draw much but somehow I started sketching Johannes face… this was getting creepy now! I snapped my book shut in annoyance… a bit too loudly as the whole class turned to look at me. I sighed, this day was going great so far! The bell went for break and we started filing out but Miss Wilson caught me by the door, ‘Do you have a minute Clara?’. Well it would get me out of having to talk to more friends about the weekend over break I guess. ‘Sure’ I said. ‘Ah good’, she paused as the rest of the class filed out. ‘We’re running a school day next week, talking to younger students about the opportunities and courses you can do with maths. We always hope to get more girls into the subject-‘ she paused and looked around the room. I guess it was fair, there were only 2 girls in this class of nearly 20. ‘I thought you might be a good student to bring along?’ ‘Oh’ I wasn’t expecting this. ‘What would I have to do?’ I was perched on the desk nearest the door, Miss Wilson came and sat beside me on it. She smiled reassuringly, ‘Just come along with me, talk to them about your future plans… why you chose to study maths’ she laughed, ‘Convince a few that following in your footsteps would be cool’ she nudged me with her elbow and gave me a wink. The desk was so small our arms were resting against each other, I turned to look at her. She was fairly young for a teacher, maybe in her 30s, and always one of the coolest despite teaching maths. Her blond hair was tied back in a casual ponytail and  had a very sporty physique, but she dressed fairly smart in simple navy blue or black suits. ‘Erm let me think about it’ I smiled, getting up, ‘I’m not really sure what I want to study at uni anyway so I’m not sure how much I’d have to say to them’. She put a hand on my elbow, standing up too. ‘Do think about it, I think between the two of us we could get a few more girls into maths.’ She smiled, we were stood very close at this point. ‘And if you ever wanted to talk about your future career options… we could grab a coffee in the canteen or somewhere some time’. At this point the bell went- great, another class I’d be running to! ‘Ah maybe, thanks’ I smiled, the ducked past her out the class. Maybe I was still shaken up by the weekend but that felt a little weird. The rest of the day was fairly uneventful – at lunch my friend Sarah drove us all to a drive through, blaring Britney spears as we went, which was great as it meant I didn’t have to relay any more information about the weekend to anyone. 3 o clock came round soon enough and when the bell went I’d already grabbed my bag and rushed off to the train station to get home. It was a 15 minute train journey, then 15minute cycle to my parents’ pub, 5 minutes quick change of clothes and 5 minutes speed walk up to the yard! So I arrived dead on 4pm, a little flustered and breathing heavily. It seemed like this whole day was going to be a rush! ‘Hey’ Johannes came out of a stable- my breath caught again and I could feel my face flushing! He was in full riding gear, immaculate knee high boots, black jodhpurs that didn’t quite hide everything and a dark fitted polo top which again showed of his slim but muscled frame. He literally looked like a model. And here I was in old track suits bottoms, yard boots and a sporty vest top with my hair scraped back into a rough bun. ‘H-hi’ I just about managed to mumble. He eyed me up and down quickly, raising an eyebrow slightly, then grinned, it was the most reassuing smile I’d ever seen, I couldn’t help but return it. ‘Let me introduce you to the team’ he said, still grinning but gesturing towards the 6 stables behind him which now had beautiful horses looking out at us over the doors. ‘They said thanks for the comfy beds’, he grinned again before turning towards them.
