Retirement didn’t exactly suit me, but it wouldn’t be for very long anyway.
It wasn’t technically classified as “retirement” but rather, “administrative leave” while they completed the investigation on what happened to Jake Cogburn, Codename Hondo. But I knew I wouldn’t be returning to my assignment or to the agency at all. Their investigation would likely reveal that I had lied on the official report and Jake was only missing, not dead. I knew that would be the outcome—my only hope was that the time it would take to complete the investigation would give Jake the chance to make his escape and start his new life.
