Chapter 2: Whispers in the Dark

960 Words
ELARA moves cautiously through the dense undergrowth, her phone’s flashlight barely cutting through the mist. The eerie silence is broken only by the occasional snap of a twig underfoot. It’s 9 PM, and she’s on her way to meet the person who messaged her. In Blackwater Creek, the night doesn’t sleep. It watches, waiting for its next prey. ELARA reaches the clearing at the edge of the woods. Her breath is visible in the cold air, and her heart 4... Jared. Was he taken there, too? ALEC looks at her, sympathy and fear in his eyes. ALEC :Maybe. I’m sorry, Elara, but people who go near that place either disappear or come back... different. --- ELARA is at the sanitarium again, this time during daylight. The building looks even more decayed in the harsh light, like a rotting carcass of something long forgotten. She steps inside, the floor creaking beneath her feet. The air is stale, and the faint smell of mildew clings to everything. She finds an old office, its furniture covered in dust, papers scattered across the floor. One file catches her eye. It’s labeled: Patient #178: Jared Monroe. Her heart skips a beat. ELARA (whispering, stunned) Jared? She opens the file, her hands trembling. Inside are medical notes, cryptic references to “experimental treatments” and “behavioral changes.” There’s a photograph of her brother, his face gaunt and eyes vacant. ELARA:He was here... They did something to him. Her phone buzzes, breaking her focus. It’s a text from DECLAN: “Meet me at the diner. We need to talk. Urgent.” ELARA pockets the file and leaves, the camera cutting to her walking out of the sanitarium, her face a mixture of shock and anger. --- The air inside is thick with the smell of coffee and grease. ELARA sits at a corner booth, waiting. DECLAN walks in, glancing around before sitting across from her. His expression is serious, his eyes sharp. DECLAN(quietly) I heard you were at the sanitarium again. Are you trying to get yourself killed? ELARA(leaning forward, speaking in a low voice) They had a file on my brother, Declan. Jared was there. What aren’t you telling me? DECLAN pauses, running a hand through his hair, clearly conflicted. DECLAN (sighing) Look, I didn’t want to drag you into this, but... things in this town are darker than you know. Jared wasn’t the only one they experimented on. There’s a reason the sanitarium was shut down. They were doing... things to people. Trying to control them. ELARA (in disbelief) Control them? You mean like mind control? DECLAN nods grimly. DECLAN :Something like that. People started acting strange. Some went missing. Some... changed. The town’s been covering it up for years. The sheriff’s in on it, too. ELARA(furious) So what, everyone just pretends like it didn’t happen? They let innocent people get taken and... and experimented on? DECLAN :It’s not that simple. There are people here—powerful people—who don’t want the past dug up. I’m telling you, Elara, you need to leave before it’s too late. ELARA(shaking her head) I can’t. I’m not leaving until I find out what happened to Jared... and to Alana. --- ELARA sitting by the fire as a child, her grandmother, NAOMI WINTERS, whispering old tales of the woods and the sanitarium. YOUNG ELARA (wide-eyed) Grandma, are the stories true? Is the sanitarium haunted? NAOMI leans in, her voice low and grave. NAOMI: It’s not ghosts you need to fear, child. It’s the living. There are things out there—things people should never meddle with. Dark forces that twist the mind. The sanitarium is a place where those forces took root. Once you step inside, it takes something from you. The flashback fades as we return to ELARA, now older, her grandmother’s words echoing in her mind. --- ELARA storms into the sheriff’s office, her anger boiling over. SHERIFF WYATT CARTER, an older man with a stern face, sits at his desk, looking up as she bursts in. SHERIFF CARTER :Miss Monroe, this is getting out of hand. You can’t keep— ELARA (cutting him off) I found my brother’s file at the sanitarium. You lied to me! You lied to everyone about what happened to him! The sheriff’s face hardens, but there’s a flicker of fear in his eyes. SHERIFF CARTER :That place is off-limits for a reason. You don’t know what you’re playing with. ELARA(furious) Don’t give me that cryptic nonsense! You knew what they were doing to those people, and you let it happen! How many more people have to disappear before you do something? The sheriff stands, his expression cold. SHERIFF CARTER You’re out of your depth, Miss Monroe. This isn’t your fight. ELARA :It is now. As ELARA leaves the sheriff’s office, she runs into NAOMI on the street. NAOMI grabs her arm, pulling her aside. NAOMI (urgently) Elara, you need to stop digging. You don’t understand what you’re dealing with. ELARA (pulling away) You knew, didn’t you? You knew about Jared and the sanitarium, and you said nothing. NAOMI’s eyes are filled with sorrow. NAOMI :I tried to protect you, child. Some things are better left buried. ELARA (shaking her head) I can’t just walk away. I have to know the truth. NAOMI sighs, her voice trembling. NAOMI: Then you should know that it wasn’t just Jared. Your father... he knew, too. He was involved. That’s why he left. ELARA freezes, her world crumbling around her. ELARA(stunned)What? What are you talking about? NAOMI : He was working with them. He thought he could control it. But he was wrong. --- ELARA stands frozen in the street, her heart pounding as she tries to process what NAOMI has told her.
