I awake to the sound of ringing in my ear. The ground shook beneath me and in that half-asleep, half-awake state, I rolled over into the strength that was Chase. He groaned in reply, but otherwise didn’t stir. I cracked an eyelid open, to see the sky filled with the orange hues of a sunrise, peeking out above the trees. And then the glass shelter we were nestled in shattered. Shouts could be heard from below. Gunfire sounded. Someone screamed. We were under attack. Chas bolted upright, his eyes searching mine in both panic, and then understanding. We stood up, brushing glass off both of us as we edged towards the metal rungs that led to the ground. Chase went first, casting some sort of protective shield around us made up of hardened air, because from up here we were easy target
