Chapter 12: The Raven’s Debt

378 Words
Julian knew he couldn't take on the Bastion alone. Their power was systemic; they had the police, the local government, and a multi-million dollar "alumni" fund. To break them, he needed a perspective that existed entirely outside the system. He needed the "hood." He tracked down Elias, the leader of the Raven Syndicate, in a basement bar that smelled of stale beer and desperation. The room went dead silent when Julian walked in. He still wore his blood-stained tactical shirt, his face gaunt and eyes hollow. Elias sat at the back, his arm in a crude sling from where Julian had snapped his wrist in the auto shop. "You’ve got a lot of nerve, college boy," Elias spat, his hand moving toward a pistol on the table. "My boys want your head on a spike for what you did to the shop." "The men who attacked your shop weren't college boys," Julian said, his voice flat and cold, devoid of the "boy next door" warmth that used to be his trademark. "They’re a shadow unit. And they’re coming back to finish the job because you saw their faces. To them, you aren't a rival; you’re a loose end." Julian laid out a map of the Bastion’s hidden armories—information he had memorized during his grueling "Silent Vigils" on the library roof. He pointed to three locations: an old fraternity annex, a private storage facility near the docks, and a basement beneath the university’s own stadium. "I don't want your money, Elias. I want your chaos. You hit these three spots tonight, and the Bastion will be too busy defending their turf to worry about a girl in a police station. You want the gold back? I’ll give you something better. I’ll give you the chance to burn the men who think they own this city." Elias looked at the map, then back at Julian. He saw the change. The "soft" student was gone. In his place stood someone who had looked into the abyss and started taking notes. "You’re a crazy bastard, 04," Elias said, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. "But the enemy of my enemy is my brother. We’ll bring the fire. You just make sure you finish the ghost who’s leading them."
