Chapter 23 Later, I sit in a chair beside two hospital beds. The occupants’ eyes, if they were open, would be the same striking gold. But they are both resting in morphine-induced slumbers. Dr. Griffin had Etta moved out of ICU to a larger room and another hospital bed brought in for Job. At this point, no amount of care, no matter how intensive, was going to save Etta. And despite having flown halfway across the world earlier that day, Job wasn’t in great shape. It was a good thing I hadn’t jumped in his lap earlier like I’d wanted to. Apparently, his condition was worse than it appeared. And that’s saying something because he looked terrible.
