The moment of truth came faster than Ava had anticipated. Liam had invited her to a weekend getaway—a cabin outside the city, away from the noise and responsibilities. She had agreed, knowing that the tension between them had grown too strong to ignore. But she also knew that this would be the last time they could be together like this, not once the truth came out.
The weekend was perfect, almost painfully so. They hiked through the woods, cooked together, and spent hours talking by the fire. Ava found herself wishing she could freeze time, just to hold onto this fleeting happiness. But as the sun set on their final night, she knew it couldn’t last.
They sat on the porch, watching the stars appear one by one in the darkening sky. Liam reached over, his fingers lacing through hers. “You’re quiet tonight,” he said softly.
Ava swallowed hard, her heart hammering in her chest. She couldn’t keep lying to him. Not anymore.
“There’s something I need to tell you,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Liam turned to face her, concern etched into his expression. “What is it?”
Ava took a deep breath, forcing herself to look into his eyes. “I haven’t been honest with you, Liam. My name isn’t Ava Sullivan.”
Liam blinked, confused. “What do you mean?”
“My real name is Ava Carlisle. My parents were… they were killed by your family.”
For a moment, the world seemed to stop. Liam’s face went pale, his grip on her hand loosening as he processed her words.
“What… what are you talking about?” he stammered, pulling away from her.
Ava could feel her heart breaking, but she pushed on. “Your family—your parents—were responsible for their deaths. I’ve spent my whole life waiting for this moment, planning to get close to you so I could take them down.”
Liam stood, his face a mix of disbelief and hurt. “So this… all of this… was just a lie?”
“No,” Ava said quickly, standing as well. “It started that way, but it’s not anymore. I swear, Liam, I didn’t expect to fall in love with you. But I did. And that’s why I’m telling you the truth now.”
Liam looked away, his hands trembling. “I don’t know if I can believe you. I don’t know if I even know who you are.”
Ava stood frozen, watching as the man she had fallen in love with unraveled before her eyes. The night, once filled with warmth and promise, was now weighed down by the crushing silence that stretched between them. Liam paced the porch, his face shadowed in disbelief and betrayal.
“How could you do this?” he asked finally, his voice trembling with emotion. “How could you get so close to me, knowing what you were planning to do?”
Ava opened her mouth to answer, but no words came. Everything she had rehearsed in her mind vanished. She could only offer the truth, broken and raw.
“I thought it would be easy,” she admitted, her voice barely audible. “I thought I could get close, learn what I needed, and leave without getting hurt. But you—” she paused, her throat tightening. “You weren’t who I expected. I never planned on falling in love with you.”
Liam turned to face her, his eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and hurt. “Love? You think this is love? After everything you’ve done?”
Ava flinched at his words, guilt twisting in her stomach. “I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s the truth. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. I thought if I could just destroy your family, it would make the pain go away. But then I met you, and everything changed.”
“That doesn’t excuse what you’ve done,” Liam said, his voice growing colder. “You lied to me, Ava. You used me.”
“I know,” she whispered, tears stinging her eyes. “But I’m telling you now because I can’t keep lying. I don’t want revenge anymore. I just want you.”
Liam shook his head, his jaw clenched as he struggled to contain his emotions. “How can I trust you after this? How do I know any of it was real?”
Ava took a step toward him, her heart pounding in her chest. “It was real,” she insisted. “All of it. I don’t care about revenge anymore, Liam. I just want to move on—together.”
For a long moment, Liam said nothing. He stood with his back to her, staring into the dark woods surrounding the cabin. When he finally spoke, his voice was heavy with the weight of his decision.
“I don’t know if I can do that,” he said quietly. “You’ve broken something between us, Ava. I don’t know if it can be fixed.”
Ava felt her heart shatter. The man she had spent months deceiving—the man she now loved—was slipping through her fingers, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
“I understand,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I’m so sorry, Liam. For everything.”
Liam turned to her, and for a brief moment, she saw the same tenderness in his eyes that had drawn her to him in the first place. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a cold resolve.
“I need some time,” he said, his voice firm. “I need to figure out what this all means—what we mean. But right now, I can’t be around you.”
Ava nodded, her throat tight as tears slid down her cheeks. “Take all the time you need,” she whispered.
Without another word, Liam walked past her and into the cabin, the door closing softly behind him. Ava stood alone on the porch, the night air cool against her skin as she tried to process the magnitude of what had just happened.
She had lost him. The man who had once been her target, the man who had become her heart, was now walking away. And for the first time in years, Ava didn’t know what came next.
