By late afternoon, Ember Hide Pack had already arranged a car to take us to a restaurant out in the suburbs that specialized in hosting visiting Alphas from different territories. Alexander, Jessica, and I rode in the same car. Alexander sat between us. The whole ride, his focus stayed on her. Adjusting the temperature, tucking a light blanket over her knees, passing her a water bottle—his movements were so smooth it felt like he’d rehearsed them a thousand times. I sat on the other side like an extra shadow. I turned my head to look out the window, doing my best to keep my breathing from sounding as uneven as it felt.
