We were long gone from the palace and I was situated in front of Aeson. His threat was lingering in my head with each passing second as the horse moved into the next unknown direction. It plagued my mind how they could understand and know of my whereabouts constantly. How did they know me? How did they know of Alice? How long have they been watching me?
Cressida moved ahead of us a while ago, claiming that she was needed else somewhere along the borders. The silence between us was painful but there was a sense of gratefulness that lingered in the air. Grateful for what though? Grateful for solitude or grateful for Cressida's absence?
I used to believe that I was wearier of Cressida but now I had a certainty that I should have been more careful around Aeson. Something about him screamed darkness and I wasn't sure that I would like to be trapped inside of it.
A fawn speeded across the path and spooked Aeson and his steed and a ghost of a smile were tracing on my lips. Everyone was afraid of something even if it was as silly as a quick reaction. "You are a strange girl Rosalie"
It was the first time he has spoken to me since our journey from the palace. I hmphed as a reply, not bothering to make small talk. I think he got the message because for the next few hours until sunset there was no talking between us. My eyes grew droopy and I was fighting myself to stay awake. The survival part of me was screaming at me to stay awake and not let my guard down against this potential threat but the other, more fatigued part of me was relishing the warmth that was emitting from his chest. I begged myself to stay awake but the need for sleep had me slumping against his taunt chest within seconds.
It wasn't until he was sure I was completely asleep that he whispered what I think was meant to be an apology.
