1:17 P.M. Jax walked from his shrink’s office to his own office. The day was bright, temperate, and appealing. The eloquent afternoon brought workers and families to the streets, enjoying the day. Jax was on Rushton Street, which was occupied with little kids, their fathers, and businesswomen in expensive suits and sunglasses. Some of the pedestrians were eating ice cream from bowls or cones. Others were leaning against brick walls or sitting along the sidewalk, relaxing. Four citizens sat around Blue Lake Diamond, a fountain in the center of Rushton Street. The fountain was a bright blue, fifteen feet high, shaped like a diamond, and chiseled from marble. The sculptor was Leslie Miller-Lake, who had died from breast cancer the previous winter, leaving a legacy of her artwork to her fans,
