Chapter 5

1241 Words
The following day, the silence in the room was oppressive. Daphne was sitting at the oversized desk, staring at the screen with her fingers lingering over the keyboard. She had attempted to persuade herself that Elliot's business issues were that - business issues - and that she was being overly suspicious. However, something about his reserved manner, the way he had dismissed her the previous evening, seemed to bother her. He appeared to be concealing something darker and more profound. The home was filled with the cool, gentle light from the desk lamp because the sun had long since set. Once soothing in its grandeur, the opulent surroundings now served as a harsh reminder of the life Daphne had consented to lead. The marital burden weighed heavily on her chest, and each mouse click seemed to reverberate around the room like a ticking clock, bringing her one step closer to an unidentified object every second. The materials in front of her resembled a maze of corporate jargon and icy legalese. But during the past few hours, she had gained enough knowledge to start putting things together. Elliot had misled people about his failed venture, which involved more than just a dubious software business. She sensed it in the way he talked about the situation vaguely, avoiding specifics. With her heart racing in her chest, she mumbled to herself, "Okay, let's see what you're hiding," as she clicked on the following file. She was looking at a company report that described the unsuccessful enterprise, but she was more interested in the names than the figures. There was a list of some of the major actors in the deal, but when Daphne looked more closely, she found something far more disturbing. Ramsay Blackwell was one of the names that were mentioned in several accounts. Although he had a history of being associated with dubious business operations, he was mentioned as a significant investor. He was connected to several dubious activities, not just one unsuccessful transaction. The understanding caused her fingers to freeze over the keyboard. "Elliot, why didn't you tell me about this?" she whispered in a low voice that sounded almost confessional to the dimly lit room. Her mind racing, she rubbed her temples while leaning back on the chair. She had believed that they might work things out and had trusted him. Now, though, it all seemed like a jumbled mix of lies. Hours of reading caused her eyes to burn. As she put more pieces of the puzzle together, she felt a knot tighten in her gut and an increasing sensation of dread. Elliot had been far more involved in the deal than he had disclosed, and it wasn't merely a failure; it was the product of deception. She began to doubt everything she believed to be true about him when she realised that he had kept this from her. As Daphne walked into the study, her anxiety growing, the corridor seemed longer than it was. Now, despite its magnificence, the home seemed empty, as though it were closing in on her. Everything she had discovered during the last few hours whirled through her mind. The truth had to be known to her. She couldn't continue to live in this state of uncertainty, unsure of what was real and what was a part of the game Elliot had set up for her. Elliot was seated behind the big desk in the study as she walked in, facing away from her, his gaze fixed on the screen. Even though he maintained his customary distance, it was insufficient to protect him from what she was going to say. She couldn't allow herself to falter even though her heart was pounding in her chest. With a steady yet piercing voice, Daphne moved closer to the desk. "We need to talk." Elliot continued to move his fingers across the keyboard without looking up. "About what?" She spoke more forcefully than she had meant to when she said, "You're hiding something from me." Her heart began to race, fury and pain mingling in her veins. "This is more than simply a failing tech startup, Elliot. There's more. You are concealing something.” Elliot was silent for a while. At last, he turned to face her, his jaw clenched and his gaze dark. "What specifically do you believe you have discovered?" Daphne could see the glint of anxiety in his eyes, but his voice was a low growl. Like the first fissure in a dam, it was slight but present. She said, "Ramsay Blackwell," in a tone that was colder than she had meant. “Why does his name appear in every report? And why am I seeing him connected to several failed deals?” Although Elliot's eyes narrowed, he didn't appear startled. Instead, he took a deep breath and sat back in his chair. “It's a mistake, nothing more. The collaboration ended when the deal went awry. There's no reason to investigate further.” Daphne, however, wasn't happy with that response. She was unable to be. She pressed, "You didn't tell me the whole story." "You admitted to me that you were having difficulties, but you didn't tell me how bad things were. You kept your investors and this man with a track record of wrongdoing a secret from me. She wasn't sure if it was fear or fury that made her voice tremble a little. She couldn't believe what Elliot was telling her. She became increasingly aware that he wasn't being honest with her as she dug further. This whole thing, this marriage, was a lie. With a groan, Elliot massaged his temples as if she were an annoyance he couldn't seem to get rid of. "You believe you are an expert, but you are not. Daphne, you have nothing to be concerned about.” Breathing more rapidly, she stepped forward. "You're telling lies. And I will no longer participate in this, Elliot. I refuse to play a part in the catastrophe you've made in business.” With a loud scrape of the chair hitting the floor, Elliot abruptly stood up. He towered above her, his weight pressing down on her like a tangible burden. For a brief period, she hoped he would say something to ease the tension between them because his face was inches from hers. Then, however, he spoke in a low, menacing voice. "Daphne, I didn't request this either. I didn't ask you to enter my life and make things more difficult. This is the situation. And whether you like it or not, you are now a part of it.” More than anything else he had spoken, the words struck her. The finality of his tone and the pang of betrayal hit her. It seemed as though he had eliminated the chance that they would ever be anything more than two individuals entangled in a complex web of responsibilities. With his hand resting on the chair's back, Elliot took a step back and gazed at her. It was oppressive to be silent with each other. "So, why did you marry me?" Daphne's question was scarcely audible above a whisper. He didn't respond right away. His gaze strayed to the desk, to the jumble of papers, to failed transactions. His eyes showed the storm inside him, but he remained silent. Daphne took a trembling breath as her heart tightened in her chest. Unanswered, the question lingered in the air.
