Melissa's Pov
The man who had made my life a living hell in high school was standing at the center of the room, his piercing eyes scanning the room as if he owned it.
As I stood, frozen on the spot, while every person acknowledged him with regard, his presence commanded attention and respect. It was a whole different aura that occupied the room in a couple of seconds.
I fidgeted with my fingers and swallowed as I watched him step into my office.
His gaze held mine, piercing, and unyielding, but held no hint of recognition.
I willed myself to keep shut, but my mouth had plans of its own.
"H..hello, Mr. McKenzie." I stuttered.
He didn't even flinch, making me bite my lips in apprehension. His expression remained cold...his cold piercing gaze made me feel invisible.
And without a word or a response to my greeting, strode past me and into his office, leaving me standing there, feeling like a fool.
My heart thumped as though it was about to jump out of my chest. Had he not recognized me? I couldn't even tell because of the indifference on his face. It reminded me of my high school days. He was always in control...a master manipulator.
And the fact that I didn't know what he was trying to do ate away at me.
Taking a deep breath in, I sat back down on my desk, not even knowing when Emily walked in.
"You seemed a bit tensed up there." I jerked my head upwards, seeing her walking towards me. "Did you know him before?" She questioned and I immediately shook my head.
"No. I just..." I licked my chapped lips, not knowing what to say.
She gave me a knowing grin. "I see you were struck just like the rest of us wasn't it?"
"You can say that," I said even though it wasn't in the way she meant.
"Yeah. He's got a reputation for being untouchable." She emphasized. "Alexander is one the top three richest, and most influential men in the world and he's not even third. There are so many stories about him that make me wonder because he's filled with mystery. Nobody knows his family, or his history, not even his high school."
I do.
"He's very cold and ruthless too. I mean you can see it in the way he walks."
She wasn't wrong. Even in high school, he was the most feared. I just didn't understand why I was always his target. There were other students he could pick on, but he chose me.
"And do you know the funny thing?" Emily asked, causing me to raise my gaze curiously. "He dated, once. You know April?"
I furrowed my brows in confusion. Then she gave a cautious nod toward my right. I turned and noticed it was the girl glaring at me earlier.
"It's her. She's been filing for the position of secretary for years, but I know the boss intentionally refused her proposal."
"Why's that?"
"There's the good part. They were about getting married."
My eyes shot wide. "What?!"
"Shhhhh." She hushed causing me to press my lips together.
"April was persistent on getting married to him. Rumors have it that, he hates marriage and doesn't want a long-term commitment with anybody. April on the other hand...well was in love. So she planned a marriage, writing it all over her blog that she was getting married to Alexander McKenzie."
My brows shot up in surprise.
"Yeah. And had her parents not pleaded with him, she would be out of this company."
"Wow... that's..."
"Crazy?"
"Yes."
"How did you get to know about all these?" I c****d a brow while she smiled mischievously.
She opened her mouth, probably to answer my question but the ringing of the telephones caught us off guard.
I answered it.
"My office, now." He sounded cold as he gave the order. I felt my heart pounding faster with trepidation as I fixed the telephone back into its position.
Did he finally remember me? Was that the reason he called? To meet him at his office and then taunt me all over again?
"You don't want to keep the boss waiting. He has a very thin patient. I forgot to say that." She said before dismissing herself from my office.
I walked over to the door, adjusting myself. I took a deep breath... composing myself before walking in.
"I need coffee. Black and no sugar." He said, not looking up from the papers on his desk.
I nodded, trying to hide my nervousness. "Right away sir."
I turned to leave when his voice made me stop in my tracks. "From today on you'll be fetching me coffee every morning. It's one of your studies as my secretary."
A surge of annoyance rushed through me at the sound of his tone. "Yes sir," I said, trying to sound as neutral as possible. "
I couldn't help but wonder what challenges lay ahead. I had a feeling that working for Alexander McKenzie was going to be a nightmare.
I tried not to spill a drop as I walked into his office with his coffee. He gently took the cup from me without even doing as much as glancing up. I didn't understand why I felt a pang of frustration but a sense of relief that he seemed not to recognize me.
"Is there anything else you need me to do for you, sir?" I asked, trying to sound as professional as possible even though curiosity still clawed at my mind just by staring at him.
He finally looked up, his piercing gaze holding mine for a moment too long, so much so that I was starting to believe he recognized me.
"That would be all for now." The distance in his tone shot through me with a sense of relief at perplexity.
"Ok, sir." I turned to leave, feeling as though I had to walk on eggshells around him.
"And one more thing." He spoke up again while I'd already reached the door.
"Yes, sir?" I whirled around, trying to hide my annoyance.
"See also, that you're on time with my coffee every single morning. I will not be tolerating lateness." He said, shuffling the papers on his desk, again without looking up.
"Yes sir."
As I left, I could have sworn I heard a low, husky whisper:
'I've been waiting.'
But when I slightly looked back, his expression remained passive, still glued to his work.
Had I imagined it?
