Present day. Thirty minutes later.
“Can I ask another question? Let’s shift gears for a moment.”
We’re back in the office, and Dr. Syfer smells like outside—hot sun and fresh-cut grass. Maybe she needed to replenish her skin. I know it’s not her true form. The people in the recreation room were all drooling puzzle players and tele watchers. Nothing interesting there. Besides, Stilts wants me to tell my story. Might as well get it over with. He promised my sister and mother would be returned and said there’s a possible cure. The question is, do I even want to be cured? I don’t exactly see myself at a disadvantage here. I have the upper hand. Take away my curse and what’s left of me? I’d become vulnerable in a game that could easily get me killed.
