CHAPTER 3

Ethan watched her quietly, not rushing her, not convincing her, just waiting. It made the decision feel even heavier, like it was fully hers to make. Lily stopped moving, her back turned to him, her eyes fixed on the window. The city stretched out below, beautiful and distant, like something she could never reach. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “If I agree,” she said slowly, turning to face him again, “there are boundaries.” Ethan raised an eyebrow slightly, showing a hint of interest. “Go on,” he said. Lily swallowed, forcing herself to meet his gaze. “This stays professional,” she continued. “No control over my personal choices outside what’s necessary. And when it ends, it ends clean.” Ethan leaned forward, resting his hands on the desk, his eyes still locked on hers. For a moment, it felt like he was seeing her for the first time, not just as part of a deal. “Agreed,” he said after a pause. Lily felt something shift in the air, something quiet but important. It wasn’t trust, not yet, but it was something close. She looked down at the contract again, her heart still uncertain but her mind clearer than before. This wasn’t the life she wanted, but it was the one in front of her now. Slowly, she reached for the pen placed beside the paper. Her fingers tightened around it, as if holding onto the last piece of her old life. “Once you sign,” Ethan said calmly, “there’s no turning back.” Lily nodded, her throat tight, her emotions tangled together. She knew that already. With one last breath, she placed the pen on the paper and signed her name. The moment the ink touched the page, everything changed. Ethan took the contract back, glancing at her signature before setting it aside. “Welcome, Mrs. Blake,” he said, his voice steady, almost formal. Lily felt the words settle around her, strange and unfamiliar. She wasn’t sure how to respond, so she simply nodded. It didn’t feel real yet, but it would. As she walked out of the office, the same hallway now felt different, like it was leading her into a life she didn’t recognize. The man in the suit guided her back to the elevator, but she barely noticed him. Her mind was still in that room, replaying everything that had just happened. She had made her choice. When the elevator doors closed, Lily looked at her reflection again, but this time, she didn’t fully recognize the person staring back. There was something new in her eyes, something uncertain but strong. She had stepped into a world she didn’t understand, with a man she didn’t know. And deep down, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
