Episode 3: The Watchers

346 Words
The city had eyes everywhere, though most people pretended otherwise. Cameras glimmered like silent sentinels, and drones hummed overhead, programmed to detect even the smallest flicker of emotion. Love wasn’t just illegal—it was hunted. Elara and him had thought they were careful, meeting in abandoned corners, whispering in shadows. But tonight, the chill in the air wasn’t just cold—it was warning. “They’re close,” he whispered, his hand brushing against hers as they ducked behind a crumbling wall. “I can feel it. Someone’s watching.” Elara’s stomach knotted. “We’ve been careful. How did they find us?” He shook his head, eyes scanning the empty street. “They always find you. This city doesn’t forget feelings. It never forgives them.” A low hum grew louder—metallic, precise. One of the city’s surveillance drones rounded the corner, its red eye scanning the alley. For a second, the world seemed to stop. Elara’s breath caught. Their hearts raced in unison, pounding out a rhythm that could betray them. “Move,” he hissed, pulling her deeper into the shadows. They slipped through backstreets, alleys so narrow they could barely walk side by side. Every shadow felt like a potential threat, every flicker of light a signal that their secret had been seen. Finally, they reached the safehouse—a small, abandoned apartment that smelled of dust and old paper, hidden from the city’s watchful eyes. He locked the door behind them and let out a long breath. “For now, we’re safe.” Elara sank against the wall, trembling. “Safe… but for how long?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he pressed a hand to her cheek, brushing back a strand of hair. “We’ll find a way. We always do. But we have to be smarter. If they catch us… it’s over.” Outside, the city continued its relentless hum, indifferent to the sparks of rebellion burning inside two hearts. Love was a crime. And tonight, the consequences were closing in faster than either of them could imagine.
