Chapter Nine The following morning, Rafferty received a call from the prison where Babbington was on remand. ‘Inspector Rafferty?’ When he confirmed it, the man said, ‘I’m the Governor at HM Prison, Elmhurst. Clive Endecott. I’m ringing about your chap, Professor Babbington.’ ‘What about him?’ Rafferty was relieved he had seen the last of the man until the trial. He could do without hearing about him, either, particularly from the Governor of Elmhurst Prison, who was known as a soft touch where the prisoners were concerned. Rafferty prepared himself to listen to some Bleeding-Heart-Liberal waffle, and then remember an urgent appointment, to cut the telephone conversation short. ‘I had Professor Babbington in my office earier today,’ said Endecott. ‘He wants to change his statement.’ ‘
