I turned to Nyx so fast that Freya actually leaned back slightly, and Nyx looked at me with the expression she wore when she had said something she had not entirely meant to say and was now calmly recalibrating, steady on the surface and somewhere slightly less steady underneath it, and I looked at her and waited because with Nyx waiting was always more effective than pushing and she knew it and I knew it and we had a long established understanding about this.
"Freya is exaggerating," she said finally, her voice carrying its usual even quality, giving nothing away.
"Freya said you have a crush," I said. "That is a specific statement. Who is Kai?"
Nyx glanced at her notebook briefly and then back at me. "He sits two rows ahead in history. He has been friendly lately."
