He did not flinch.
That was the first thing I noticed, the complete absence of any reaction to what I had just said, no surprise, no shift in his posture, just that steady calm of his sitting exactly where it always sat, and for the first time standing in front of him I found myself wondering whether what I had always read as calm was actually that simple.
He looked at me for a moment and then said he had gotten into trouble with Professor Reid, that there had been a disciplinary matter about his absences and he had been dealing with the consequences off campus, and that he should have told me sooner.
