The night felt wrong. Not in a way Alessia could explain—but in a way her body understood before her mind could catch up. The air was too still, the city too quiet, like everything was holding its breath in anticipation of something inevitable. She should have stayed home. She knew that. Dominic had told her to. But Alessia Moretti had never been good at walking away from things that mattered—and whether she wanted to admit it or not, he mattered. By the time she arrived at the industrial district on the outskirts of the city, unease had settled deep in her chest. The building stood like a forgotten memory—dark, broken windows, rust creeping along its edges, silence stretching unnaturally around it. This was not her world. But somehow… she had stepped into it willingly. Pushing the heavy door open, it creaked loudly, the sound echoing through the hollow space inside. Her heels clicked against the concrete floor as she moved further in, every step louder than the last. “Dominic?” she called out, her voice sharper than she intended. No response. Only the faint sound of something shifting in the distance. Her heart began to pound harder. Then— “You shouldn’t be here.” Alessia spun around instantly. Dominic stood a few steps behind her, emerging from the shadows like he had been part of them all along. But something was different tonight. His usual calm control was strained, his shoulders tense, his eyes darker than she had ever seen them. “I told you to stay away,” he said, his voice low but edged with something dangerous. “I don’t take orders,” she shot back, though her voice softened slightly. “Not from you.” For a second, something almost like frustration flickered across his face. “That’s exactly the problem,” he muttered. She stepped closer despite herself. “Then explain it to me. Stop shutting me out.” His jaw tightened. He looked at her like he was weighing something—like telling her the truth would change everything. “It already has,” he said quietly. Alessia frowned. “What does that mean?” A long pause. Then, finally— “There are people who know about you now,” Dominic said. “People who think you’re… important to me.” The words landed heavier than she expected. “And are they wrong?” she asked softly. He didn’t answer immediately. And somehow… that silence said everything............
