CHAPTER FOUR — Testing Boundaries

830 Words
Elior sat on the edge of her bed, heart still racing from the morning chaos. Cassian didn’t move. He lay on his bed like a predator, with one of his dark eyebrows raised as he watched her unpack. “Don’t sit there like you’re helpless,” he said finally, his voice low. “You’re going to have to learn fast around here. Or someone’s going to eat you alive.” She hated the way his words made her feel small, exposed, yet… oddly aware of him. She swallowed hard. “I… I can handle myself,” she muttered, trying to sound braver than she felt. Cassian’s lips twitched into a half-smile. “Can you?” he asked. The single word felt like a challenge. Before she could answer, one of the rowdy boys from earlier poked his head in. “New guy, the courtyard’s open. Everyone’s messing around. You coming?” Cassian shot him a sharp look. “Not everyone’s welcome,” he said. Then he turned to Elior. “You in?” Elior hesitated. She wanted to say no, wanted to hide in her room, but some stubborn part of her, the part that had survived her family’s hiding and running all these years pushed her forward. She nodded. Cassian’s eyebrow shot up. “Huh. Didn’t expect that.” Outside, the academy courtyard was alive with noise. Boys shouted, laughed, and ran in chaotic circles. Elior felt her nerves spike, but something strange happened: she didn’t shrink away. When one of the bigger boys tried to push her aside, she planted her feet firmly and sent him stumbling backward. The courtyard went quiet for a split second. Then whispers broke out. “Whoa… did you see that?” “He actually… pushed him?” “That’s a new kid?” Cassian’s dark gaze found her immediately. He didn’t look impressed. Not yet. But there was a flash in his eyes he didn’t let anyone else see. It was either curiosity, surprise… maybe even an interest. “You’re stronger than I thought,” he said quietly when she passed him. Elior’s heart skipped. “I—It’s nothing.” Cassian smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He was watching her in a way no one else dared. The way he looked at her made Elior feel… exposed, yet alive. As the day wore on, Elior proved herself in small ways: a quick dodge during gym drills, carrying the heavy training equipment without complaint, standing up to a few taunts with sharp words that surprised everyone, including Cassian. By the end of the day, whispers about the “new kid who might actually be tough” started circulating. Elior could feel the attention, and though it frightened her, a strange thrill ran through her veins. Cassian, however, remained silent. He didn’t laugh, didn’t smile, didn’t congratulate her. But when no one was watching, his eyes lingered on her longer than they should have. That evening, Elior returned to the room, exhausted but oddly proud. Cassian was there, lying on his bed, reading. “You’re quiet today,” she said softly. He didn’t look up. “I’m observing,” he said simply. “Observing… me?” Finally, his eyes flicked to hers. “I noticed you don’t just survive. You adapt. That’s… unusual.” Elior’s throat tightened. The words, simple as they were, felt heavier than anything he had said before. Something about the way he said it was a warning and a compliment all at once. “I’m just… learning,” she whispered. Cassian’s lips curled into a half-smile, dangerous and unreadable. “Be careful. Around here, adapting isn’t enough. You have to be clever. And ruthless, sometimes.” Her stomach turned at the edge in his voice, the danger he carried even when he wasn’t moving, wasn’t acting. And yet, she felt a spark of something she hadn’t felt in years. Strength, determination and even defiance. Later that night, as Elior lay in bed staring at the ceiling, she heard footsteps outside the room. Cassian’s voice called softly, but it wasn’t directed at her. “Report to my father. Now.” Her heart froze. His father? The principal? Cassian sighed, muttering something under his breath she couldn’t catch. She felt a chill run down her spine. The man running this academy, Cassian’s father, was clearly someone powerful, someone dangerous. Someone who, she had a sneaking suspicion, had a hand in the reason she was here, in this place she was never meant to be. Elior rolled onto her side, she held the sheets tighter and her mind became restless. She was learning something crucial about herself tonight: she could survive, she could fight back, and maybe… just maybe… she could even impress him, without ever revealing her secret. But as her eyes drifted toward the door, she realized: Cassian’s father was watching. The academy wasn’t just a school. It was a trap. And somehow… she was the bait.
