They entered the Ember Fields at midnight.
The heat hit Jaxon like a physical wall—dry, scorching, filled with the stench of sulfur and burning rock. The ground beneath his feet was cracked and black, glowing faintly with veins of molten orange. In the distance, geysers of flame erupted from the earth, painting the sky in shades of red and gold.
This is hell, Jaxon thought. I'm walking into hell.
Bastion stayed close behind him, his face pale with fear. The boy hadn't spoken since they'd entered the plains. His eyes darted from shadow to shadow, his hand never leaving his knife.
The System flickered:
[LOCATION: EMBER FIELDS – MAIN TERRITORY]
[ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD: EXTREME HEAT]
[WARNING: PROLONGED EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE QI DEPLETION]
[ADVICE: FIND SHELTER BEFORE DAWN]
Jaxon ignored the advice. He couldn't afford to stop—not with only three chapters left before the Matriarch's deadline.
They walked for hours, navigating through the burning plains. The terrain was treacherous—cracks in the earth that led to rivers of lava, geysers that erupted without warning, clouds of toxic gas that made his eyes water and his lungs burn.
But Jaxon didn't slow down.
Chess, he thought. The board is against me. But I can still win.
They found the first body just before dawn.
It was a cultivator—a man in black robes, his face frozen in an expression of terror. His chest had been torn open, his dantian ripped out.
Bastion gagged. "What... what happened to him?"
Jaxon knelt beside the body and examined the wound. The edges were clean, precise—the work of a skilled killer.
"Someone wanted his cultivation," Jaxon said. "They ripped out his dantian and absorbed his qi."
"Who would do that?"
"Someone powerful. Someone who doesn't want witnesses."
The System flickered:
[NOTIFICATION: MURDER VICTIM DETECTED]
[CAUSE OF DEATH: DANTAIN EXTRACTION]
[TIME OF DEATH: 6 HOURS AGO]
[WARNING: THE KILLER MAY STILL BE IN THE AREA]
Jaxon stood up and scanned the horizon.
Kendra Sage, he thought. Is this her work?
He didn't know. But he intended to find out.
They found the second body an hour later.
This one was a woman—also in black robes, also with her dantian ripped out. Her body had been posed against a rock, her eyes open, her mouth frozen in a scream.
Bastion turned away, his face green.
Jaxon examined the body.
Same killer, he thought. Same technique. Same precision.
The System flickered:
[NOTIFICATION: SECOND MURDER VICTIM DETECTED]
[VICTIMS APPEAR TO BE MEMBERS OF THE SAME FACTION]
[FACTION IDENTIFIED: HEAVENLY COURT – ADVANCE SCOUTS]
Jaxon's blood ran cold.
Heavenly Court scouts. Someone is hunting them.
He looked at the bodies again. The killer had been methodical—killing the scouts one by one, extracting their cultivation, leaving their bodies as warnings.
Whoever did this is either a genius or a monster, Jaxon thought. Maybe both.
"Jaxon," Bastion whispered. "We need to leave. Whoever did this might still be nearby."
"I know." Jaxon stood up. "But we need to find out who they are. If they're hunting the Heavenly Court, they might be allies."
"Or they might be worse than the Court."
Jaxon nodded. "That's the risk."
They continued walking.
The western cliffs came into view just as the sun rose.
They were exactly as Jaxon had described to the rogues—a jagged line of black stone rising above the burning plains, their peaks lost in clouds of ash and smoke. At their base, Jaxon could see the ruins of an old mining operation—abandoned tunnels, collapsed buildings, rusted equipment.
Kendra Sage, he thought. She's here. I can feel it.
The System flickered:
[LOCATION: WESTERN CLIFFS – KENDRA SAGE'S TERRITORY]
[DISTANCE TO TARGET: 30 MINUTES]
[WARNING: MULTIPLE HOSTILE CULTIVATORS DETECTED]
Jaxon stopped.
"What is it?" Bastion asked.
"Someone's here. More than one." Jaxon's Demon Sense pulsed—a cold pressure against his consciousness. "At least five cultivators. Maybe more."
"Kendra's people?"
"Maybe. Or maybe the Heavenly Court found her first."
Bastion's face went pale. "What do we do?"
Jaxon thought for a moment.
Chess, he thought. What's the best move?
Option one: approach directly. Dangerous. They'd be outnumbered and outmatched.
Option two: wait and observe. Safer. But time was running out.
Option three: create a distraction. Draw out the enemy. Find an opening.
"We wait," Jaxon said. "We observe. We find out who's here and what they want."
They found a hidden vantage point—a small cave carved into the side of a cliff, overlooking the mining ruins. From there, they could see everything.
And what they saw made Jaxon's blood run cold.
The mining ruins were occupied.
A dozen cultivators moved through the camp—hard-faced men and women in mismatched armor, their weapons drawn, their eyes scanning the horizon. They weren't rogues. They were professionals.
Mercenaries, Jaxon thought. Kendra Sage's people.
But there was someone else with them.
A man in white robes stood at the center of the camp, his arms crossed, his face hidden by a hood. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and radiated an aura of power that made Jaxon's Demon Sense scream.
The System flickered:
[NOTIFICATION: HIGH-VALUE TARGET DETECTED]
[IDENTITY: UNKNOWN]
[CULTIVATION REALM: CORE FORMATION, PEAK]
[THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME]
Core Formation, Jaxon thought. Peak. That's three realms above me.
He couldn't fight this man. Not directly. Not yet.
"The white-robed man," Bastion whispered. "He's... he's terrifying."
"Stay quiet," Jaxon warned.
They watched.
The white-robed man spoke to one of the mercenaries—a woman with short black hair and a scar across her cheek. She nodded and gestured to the mines.
They're looking for something, Jaxon realized. Or someone.
The woman turned, and Jaxon caught a glimpse of her face.
Kendra Sage.
He recognized her from the description Alvina had given him—the sharp features, the scar, the cold eyes that seemed to see everything.
The System flickered:
[TARGET IDENTIFIED: KENDRA SAGE]
[STATUS: ALLIED WITH UNKNOWN FACTION]
[WARNING: SHE MAY BE WORKING FOR THE HEAVENLY COURT]
Jaxon frowned. Working for the Court? Or pretending to?
He needed to get closer. He needed to hear what they were saying.
"Stay here," Jaxon whispered to Bastion.
"What? No—"
"That's an order." Jaxon's voice was firm. "If I'm not back in an hour, leave. Go back to the sect. Tell Alvina what happened."
Bastion hesitated, then nodded.
Jaxon slipped out of the cave and began his descent.
He moved like a shadow, using the terrain to hide his approach. The Demon Sense ability pulsed steadily—warning him of guards, alerting him to patrols, guiding him through the camp unseen.
He reached the edge of the mining ruins and pressed himself against a collapsed wall.
The white-robed man was speaking.
"—find her. She has the information we need."
"She's not here." Kendra Sage's voice was calm, controlled. "She hasn't been here for days."
"Then where is she?"
"I don't know. But I know someone who does."
The white-robed man turned. "Who?"
"The boy. The one from the Shadow Fen Sect. He's been asking questions about the Veil family. He knows more than he's telling."
Jaxon's blood ran cold.
They're talking about Bastion.
Kendra Sage continued. "He's traveling with the transmigrator. The one the Court is looking for."
"The transmigrator." The white-robed man's voice was cold. "Jaxon Veil."
"Yes. He's here. In the Ember Fields. Looking for me."
"And you let him come?"
"I didn't let him do anything. He's clever. Smarter than the original." Kendra paused. "He's also desperate. His meridians are damaged. He needs a cure."
The white-robed man laughed. "A cure. And you have it?"
"I have information. That's all."
"Then give it to me."
"Not yet." Kendra's voice was sharp. "I want something in return."
"What?"
"The boy. Bastion Yule. I want him alive."
The white-robed man was silent for a long moment.
"Why?"
"Because his father was my contact. He was supposed to deliver information about the Veil family m******e. He died before he could."
"And you think the boy knows something?"
"I think the boy knows everything."
Jaxon's mind raced.
Kendra Sage wants Bastion. The white-robed man wants the transmigrator. And both of them are willing to kill to get what they want.
He needed to get out of here. He needed to warn Bastion.
He turned to leave—
And a hand closed around his throat.
"Going somewhere, transmigrator?"
The voice was cold, amused, and utterly terrifying.
Jaxon looked up.
The white-robed man stood over him, his hood pulled back to reveal a face that was both beautiful and cruel. Pale skin. Silver hair. Eyes that glowed with an otherworldly light.
Not human, Jaxon realized. Something else.
The System flickered wildly:
[WARNING: HOST HAS BEEN CAPTURED]
[WARNING: CAPTOR IS A HEAVENLY COURT AGENT]
[WARNING: CULTIVATION REALM: CORE FORMATION, PEAK]
[ADVICE: DO NOT RESIST]
Jaxon didn't resist.
The white-robed man smiled.
"Good. You're smarter than the original." He released Jaxon's throat and stepped back. "I've been waiting for you, Jaxon Veil. Or should I say... Ethan?"
Jaxon's heart stopped.
He knows my name.
"How—"
"I know many things." The man's smile widened. "I know you're from another world. I know you have a System. I know you're trying to survive."
He leaned closer.
"And I know you're going to help me."
