MARK OF THE DEMON

1634 Words
Jaxon's mind raced. He knows my name. He knows about the System. He knows everything. The white-robed man—the Heavenly Court agent—stood before him, his silver hair glowing in the firelight, his otherworldly eyes studying Jaxon like a specimen under glass. "Who are you?" Jaxon asked, keeping his voice steady. "My name is Felis Mordain," the man said. "Though I suspect you've heard of me." Jaxon's blood ran cold. Felis Mordain. The sect elder. The fallen immortal. The System flickered: [NOTIFICATION: IDENTITY CONFIRMED – FELIS MORDAIN] [STATUS: FALLEN IMMORTAL – DAO ASCENSION, EARLY STAGE (SEALED)] [CURRENT APPEARANCE: CORE FORMATION, PEAK] [THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME] [WARNING: DO NOT TRUST HIM] Jaxon forced himself to stay calm. "You're a long way from the Shadow Fen Sect, Elder Mordain." "I'm a long way from many things." Felis smiled. "But I'm exactly where I need to be." He gestured, and two mercenaries stepped forward. They grabbed Jaxon by the arms and forced him to his knees. "Bring him," Felis said. They dragged Jaxon through the mining camp, past the staring mercenaries, past the burning geysers, past the ruins of what had once been a thriving operation. Kendra Sage walked beside Felis, her face unreadable. They stopped in front of a collapsed mine entrance. Felis turned to face Jaxon. "You're probably wondering why I'm here," he said. "Why a sect elder would travel to the Ember Fields and consort with mercenaries." "The thought crossed my mind." Felis laughed. "I like you, Jaxon. You're clever. Cautious. You don't panic." He paused. "The original was different. He was arrogant. Reckless. He thought he could outsmart everyone." "Maybe he could." "No. He couldn't." Felis's eyes hardened. "That's why he's dead. And that's why you're here." The System flickered: [WARNING: HOST IS IN DANGER] [WARNING: FELIS MORDAIN HAS AN AGENDA] [ADVICE: LISTEN CAREFULLY. LOOK FOR WEAKNESSES.] Jaxon said nothing. Felis continued. "I knew the original Jaxon. I watched him fall. I watched him become the villain everyone feared. And I did nothing." "Why?" "Because I needed him to fall." Felis's voice was cold. "I needed a villain. A scapegoat. Someone to take the blame for what I was planning." Jaxon's heart pounded. "What were you planning?" "The destruction of the Heavenly Court." The words hung in the air. Kendra Sage shifted uncomfortably. The mercenaries glanced at each other. Even the wind seemed to pause. "The Heavenly Court," Jaxon repeated. "The same Court you serve?" "I don't serve them." Felis's eyes blazed. "I was one of them. A thousand years ago, I was an immortal—a general in the Court's army. I fought their wars. I killed their enemies. I believed in their cause." He paused. "Then I learned the truth. The Court doesn't protect the world. It controls it. It manipulates sects. It engineers conflicts. It creates villains so it can play the hero." Jaxon thought of the System. The memory theft. The countdown to the Hero's arrival. "You're talking about the Heavenly Hero," he said. "Yes." Felis nodded. "The Hero is a lie. A construct. The Court creates a villain, then creates a hero to defeat them. It's a cycle—a ritual that feeds the Court's power." The System flickered: [NOTIFICATION: CRITICAL INFORMATION RECEIVED] [QUEST UPDATE: SURVIVAL PROTOCOL] [NEW OBJECTIVE: EXPOSE THE HEAVENLY COURT'S MANIPULATION] [REWARD: UNKNOWN] [WARNING: THIS QUEST WILL MAKE POWERFUL ENEMIES] Jaxon's mind raced. The Court creates villains. The Court creates heroes. It's all a game to them. "And I'm the current villain," he said. "You are." Felis smiled. "But you're also something else. Something the Court didn't expect." "What?" "A transmigrator. A soul from another world. A variable they can't control." Felis stepped closer. "That's why I need you, Jaxon. That's why I've been watching you since the moment you arrived. You're the key to breaking the cycle." Jaxon's heart pounded. He's been watching me. He knows about the System. He knows about Ethan. "How?" Jaxon asked. "How do you know all this?" "Because I helped the original Jaxon perform the ritual." The world stopped. Jaxon stared at Felis. "You... you helped him?" "I did." Felis's voice was calm. "I gave him the forbidden texts. I taught him the technique. I guided him through the process." "Why?" "Because I needed a vessel. Someone who could carry the original's soul—and someone who could break free of the Court's control." Felis paused. "The original Jaxon was too far gone. His soul was corrupted by demonic cultivation. But you... you're different." Jaxon's hands trembled. "You used him. You used both of us." "I used everyone." Felis's smile was cold. "That's what chess players do." Chess. The word hit Jaxon like a blade. "You know I play chess?" "I know everything about you, Ethan." Felis's eyes glittered. "I know you were a grandmaster. I know you died crossing the street. I know you woke up in Jaxon's body with a System that steals your memories." He leaned closer. "And I know you're running out of time." The System flickered: [WARNING: FELIS MORDAIN KNOWS TOO MUCH] [WARNING: HOST'S SECRETS ARE COMPROMISED] [ADVICE: DO NOT TRUST HIM. DO NOT BELIEVE HIM.] Jaxon forced himself to breathe. He knows everything. But he wants something. He needs me for something. "What do you want?" Jaxon asked. "I want you to help me destroy the Heavenly Court." The silence stretched. Kendra Sage watched Jaxon with cold, calculating eyes. The mercenaries shifted uneasily. Felis stood perfectly still, waiting. Jaxon's mind raced. Chess, he thought. What's the best move? Option one: refuse. Dangerous. Felis could kill him easily. Option two: agree. But that meant trusting a man who'd admitted to manipulating everyone. Option three: negotiate. Buy time. Find an opening. "Why should I trust you?" Jaxon asked. "You used the original Jaxon. You watched him fall. You did nothing to help him." "I couldn't help him." Felis's voice was sharp. "The original was already corrupted. The miasma pools had eaten his soul. He was a lost cause." "And I'm not?" "You're different. Your soul is intact—damaged, but intact. You can still make choices. You can still change the game." Felis stepped closer. "The Court has a plan. They've already chosen a Hero—a cultivator from the Heavenly Summit. He's training right now. In 120 chapters, he'll come for you. And when he does, he'll kill you. Unless..." "Unless what?" "Unless you become strong enough to kill him first." The System flickered: [WARNING: HOST HAS BEEN PRESENTED WITH A CHOICE] [OPTION 1: ALLY WITH FELIS MORDAIN] [REWARD: POWER, KNOWLEDGE, PROTECTION] [COST: UNKNOWN] [OPTION 2: REFUSE] [REWARD: NONE] [COST: DEATH] Jaxon stared at the screen. Chess, he thought. Every move has a cost. Every choice has a consequence. "What's the price?" Jaxon asked. "You said you used the original. You said you manipulated everyone. What do you want from me?" Felis smiled. "I want you to become the villain the Court fears. Not the villain they created. Not the villain the original became. Something else." "Something else?" "A villain who wins. A villain who breaks the cycle. A villain who destroys the Court and frees this world from their control." Felis extended his hand. "Join me, Jaxon. Help me end this. And I will give you everything you need to survive." Jaxon stared at the offered hand. Chess, he thought. The king is exposed. The queen is threatened. The board is chaos. But I can still win. He thought of Bastion, waiting in the cave. He thought of Alvina, healing him despite everything. He thought of the memories he'd lost—twelve fragments, gone forever. If I join Felis, I might survive. I might become strong enough to fight the Hero. But at what cost? The System flickered: [WARNING: DECISION POINT APPROACHING] [HOST MUST CHOOSE] [ADVICE: WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, THE GAME WILL CONTINUE.] Jaxon looked at Felis. "I have conditions," he said. Felis raised an eyebrow. "Conditions?" "First: Bastion Yule. He's under my protection. You don't touch him. You don't use him. You don't hurt him." Felis's eyes flickered. "The boy with the hidden bloodline. Interesting." "Second: Alvina Cascade. She stays out of this. Whatever you're planning, she's not involved." "The healer who poisoned you. You care about her." "I care about keeping my word." Felis studied him for a long moment. "Very well," he said. "The boy and the healer are off-limits. What's your third condition?" Jaxon took a deep breath. "I want to know the truth. All of it. About the Court. About the System. About the Hero." Felis smiled. "Then we have a deal." He extended his hand again. Jaxon took it. The System flickered wildly: [ALLIANCE FORMED: FELIS MORDAIN] [QUEST UPDATE: SURVIVAL PROTOCOL] [NEW OBJECTIVE: DESTROY THE HEAVENLY COURT] [REWARD: UNKNOWN] [WARNING: FELIS MORDAIN IS NOT TO BE TRUSTED] [WARNING: THIS ALLIANCE WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES] Jaxon released Felis's hand and stepped back. "Now," he said. "Tell me everything." Felis gestured to Kendra Sage. "Kendra has the information you need. About the Veil family. About the poison. About the person who stole her research." Kendra stepped forward. Her face was hard, her eyes cold. "I'll tell you what you want to know," she said. "But first, I need something from you." "What?" "The boy. Bastion Yule. I need to speak with him. Alone." Jaxon's eyes narrowed. "Why?" "Because his father was my contact. Because he knows things he doesn't realize he knows." Kendra paused. "And because I promised his father I'd protect him." The System flickered: [NOTIFICATION: KENDRA SAGE – RELATIONSHIP STATUS UPDATED] [TRUST LEVEL: 15%] [HIDDEN AGENDA: PROTECT BASTION YULE] Jaxon thought for a moment. Chess, he thought. Kendra wants Bastion. Felis wants me. Everyone wants something. "Fine," he said. "But I'm coming with you." Kendra nodded. "Agreed." Felis smiled. "Excellent. Now, let's begin."
