Jaxon stared at Bastion Yule.
The boy was trembling—not from fear, but from exhaustion. His robes were dirty, his face pale, his eyes bloodshot. He looked like a man who'd been running from something for a long time.
"The Heavenly Court," Jaxon repeated. "You're sure?"
"I'm sure." Bastion's voice was hoarse. "I overheard two enforcers talking. They mentioned your name. They said the Court was sending someone to... to deal with you."
"Deal with me how?"
"I don't know. But it sounded bad."
Jaxon leaned against the wall. His mind was racing, calculating moves and countermoves.
The Heavenly Court. The same entity that had created the System. The same entity that had prophesied the Heavenly Hero. They knew about him. They knew he was a transmigrator.
Of course they do, he thought bitterly. The System is their tool. They've probably known since the moment I arrived.
But if they knew, why hadn't they acted? Why send a rogue cultivator to the Ember Fields? Why not just kill him now?
Because they want something, he realized. They're testing me. Or using me. Or both.
The System flickered.
[NOTIFICATION: HOST HAS GAINED CRITICAL INTELLIGENCE]
[NEW OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE THE HEAVENLY COURT'S ATTENTION]
[REWARD: UNKNOWN]
[PENALTY: DEATH]
Jaxon suppressed a sigh. Death. Always death.
He looked at Bastion. The boy was still trembling, still waiting for a response.
"Why are you telling me this?" Jaxon asked. "You don't know me. You have no reason to help me."
Bastion hesitated. "I... I heard what you said in the Obsidian Hall. About someone wanting the original Jaxon to fall. I think you were right."
"You think?"
"I know." Bastion's voice dropped to a whisper. "My father was a servant in the Veil family household. He was there when the poisoning happened. He saw things. He tried to tell the elders, but they silenced him."
Jaxon's blood ran cold. "Your father?"
"He's dead now. Killed in an 'accident' three years ago." Bastion's eyes hardened. "I've been trying to find proof ever since. When I heard you speak up, I thought... maybe you could help me."
The System flickered.
[NEW INDIVIDUAL: BASTION YULE]
[RELATIONSHIP STATUS: POTENTIAL ALLY]
[TRUST LEVEL: 8%]
[HIDDEN AGENDA: REVENGE FOR FATHER'S DEATH]
Jaxon studied the boy. Bastion was young, inexperienced, and desperate. He was also a potential liability—someone who could betray Jaxon if the price was right.
But he was also a source of information. A link to the Veil family m******e.
"Fine," Jaxon said. "You can come with me. But you follow my orders. You don't speak unless spoken to. And if you betray me..."
He let the threat hang in the air.
Bastion nodded quickly. "I understand. I won't let you down."
We'll see, Jaxon thought.
The journey to the Ember Fields would take three days. Three days of travel through hostile territory, with a damaged cultivation base and a boy who might be a spy.
Jaxon needed to be stronger.
He returned to his quarters and sat on the bed, staring at the System screen.
[CURRENT REALM: QI CONDENSATION, LAYER 7 (DAMAGED)]
[MERIDIAN INTEGRITY: 32%]
[ESTIMATED TIME TO COLLAPSE: 80 CHAPTERS]
[CULTIVATION POINTS: 150]
He had 150 points. Not enough to buy anything useful from the System shop—not that he trusted the System's "rewards" anyway.
But there was another option.
The miasma pools.
The original Jaxon's journal had mentioned them. The cursed energy of Crimson Peak. The source of his demonic cultivation. The deal he'd made with something ancient beneath the mountain.
Dangerous, Jaxon thought. But also powerful.
The System flickered.
[WARNING: MIASMA POOLS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS]
[WARNING: THE ENTITY BENEATH THE MOUNTAIN IS A PREDATOR]
[WARNING: USING THE POOLS MAY ACCELERATE MERIDIAN DECAY]
[RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT ENGAGE]
Jaxon smiled grimly. "You keep saying that. But you also keep giving me missions that require power I don't have."
The System didn't respond.
He stood up and walked to the window. The perpetual twilight had deepened—it was night now, or what passed for night on Crimson Peak. The courtyard below was empty.
If I'm going to the Ember Fields, I need every advantage I can get, he thought. I need to break through to Layer 8. Maybe even Layer 9.
But breaking through required qi. And his meridians were too damaged to channel qi safely.
Unless I use the pools.
The journal had described the pools as a shortcut—a way to force breakthroughs without years of training. The original Jaxon had used them to reach Layer 7 in record time.
But the cost had been his sanity. His memories. His soul.
What will it cost me?
The System flickered.
[NOTIFICATION: HOST IS CONTEMPLATING MIASMA POOL USAGE]
[ESTIMATED MEMORY COST: 5-10 FRAGMENTS]
[ESTIMATED MERIDIAN DAMAGE: +15%]
[ESTIMATED CULTIVATION GAIN: +1 REALM]
[RISK ASSESSMENT: HIGH]
[REWARD ASSESSMENT: HIGH]
Jaxon closed his eyes.
Chess, he thought. Sacrifice the pawn to save the king.
But what if the pawn was his soul?
He opened his eyes.
"I don't have a choice," he said aloud. "If I don't get stronger, I'll die in the Ember Fields. And if I die, the conspiracy wins."
He grabbed his knife and headed for the door.
The miasma pools were in the deepest part of the Crimson Peak, below the Disciplinary Chambers, below the sect's dungeons, below everything. They were forbidden for a reason—the energy they emitted was toxic to most cultivators, corrosive to the soul.
But Jaxon wasn't most cultivators.
He moved through the corridors silently, avoiding the patrol routes he'd memorized from the sect map. The Threat Assessment function showed him the positions of the guards—two enforcers near the entrance to the lower levels, both at Foundation Establishment.
Enforcer – Foundation Establishment, Early – Threat Level: High
Jaxon waited until they'd passed, then slipped through the door behind them.
The stairs descended into darkness.
The miasma pools were exactly as the journal had described them.
A cavern, vast and echoing, lit by the glow of a dozen pools of liquid darkness. The pools bubbled and steamed, releasing a vapor that made Jaxon's eyes water and his lungs burn. The air was thick with the smell of rot and copper.
And the whispers.
Come closer, the whispers said. We can give you power. We can give you everything you desire.
Jaxon gritted his teeth. "I've heard that before."
He walked to the edge of the nearest pool and looked down.
The liquid was black—not just dark, but void-black, like a hole in reality. It reflected nothing. It absorbed everything.
The System flickered.
[WARNING: HOST IS IN DIRECT PROXIMITY TO MIASMA POOL]
[WARNING: ENTITY CONTACT IMMINENT]
[RECOMMENDATION: LEAVE IMMEDIATELY]
"Not yet," Jaxon said.
He knelt beside the pool and reached out with his spiritual senses.
Immediately, something touched him.
It was cold. Colder than anything he'd ever felt—a cold that seeped into his bones, his meridians, his soul. He felt it probing him, testing him, tasting him.
Ah, a voice said. You're new.
Jaxon's heart stopped.
The voice was ancient. Vast. It sounded like mountains grinding together, like stars dying, like the end of everything.
The old one is gone, the voice continued. You wear his skin, but you are not him. Interesting.
"I'm not here to talk," Jaxon said. "I need power."
Power. The voice laughed. Everyone wants power. But power has a price.
"I know."
Do you? The voice paused. The old one thought he knew. He paid with his memories. His sanity. His soul. And in the end, he tried to escape.
"I'm not him."
No. You're not. The voice seemed to consider this. You're different. Your soul is... fractured. Tired. You've known pain.
Jaxon didn't respond.
I can help you, the voice said. I can give you the power to survive. To protect. To destroy those who would harm you.
"What's the price?"
Memories, the voice said. Not just fragments. Whole pieces of who you are. I want the things you cherish most.
Jaxon closed his eyes.
Chess, he thought. Sacrifice the pawn to save the king.
"Fine," he said. "Take them."
The pain was indescribable.
The miasma pool erupted, liquid darkness surging up to wrap around Jaxon's body like chains. He felt it pour into his meridians, burning and freezing at the same time, tearing through damaged channels and forcing them open.
He screamed.
The System flickered wildly:
[MIASMA ENERGY DETECTED]
[MERIDIAN DAMAGE INCREASING]
[CULTIVATION REALM ADVANCING]
[MEMORY CONSUMPTION INITIATED]
Jaxon felt the memories being pulled from his mind like teeth being extracted. His childhood home. His mother's garden. The first time he'd won a chess tournament. The smell of rain on asphalt.
No, he thought desperately. Not that one. Please—
But the pool didn't care. It took what it wanted.
And then, as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped.
Jaxon collapsed onto the stone floor, gasping for breath. His body was on fire. His mind was reeling.
The System flickered:
[CULTIVATION REALM ADVANCED: QI CONDENSATION, LAYER 8]
[MERIDIAN DAMAGE: 47%]
[MEMORY FRAGMENTS LOST: 12]
[HUMANITY GAUGE: 85%]
Twelve memories. Gone.
Jaxon tried to remember what they were—but he couldn't. He only felt the absence. Twelve holes in his mind, twelve pieces of himself that would never come back.
He sat up slowly.
The whispers had stopped. The pool was calm now, its surface flat and still.
You survived, the voice said. Impressive.
Jaxon didn't respond.
You have more strength than the old one. More will. But you also have more to lose. The voice paused. I look forward to seeing what you become.
The presence faded.
Jaxon sat in the silence for a long time.
He returned to his quarters just before dawn.
The System flickered as he walked:
[NOTIFICATION: HOST HAS ADVANCED TO QI CONDENSATION, LAYER 8]
[NEW ABILITY UNLOCKED: DEMONIC SENSE]
[HOST CAN NOW DETECT HOSTILE INTENT WITHIN 50 METERS]
[WARNING: THIS ABILITY IS FUELED BY MIASMA ENERGY]
[LONG-TERM USE MAY ACCELERATE MERIDIAN DECAY]
Jaxon nodded. He understood. Everything had a price.
He sat on his bed and closed his eyes.
Twelve memories. Gone forever. He couldn't remember what they were, but he felt their absence like missing teeth—a constant, aching reminder that he was losing himself piece by piece.
How many more? he wondered. How many memories before I forget who I am?
The System didn't answer.
Jaxon opened his eyes and looked at the list of consumed memories:
[CONSUMED MEMORIES:]
1. First Kiss – High School – Permanently Lost
2. Childhood Home – Permanently Lost
3. Mother's Garden – Permanently Lost
4. First Chess Tournament Victory – Permanently Lost
5. Rain on Asphalt – Permanently Lost
6-12. [Locked] – Requires Further Missions to Unlock
He stared at the list.
Mother's Garden.
He couldn't remember it. He couldn't remember his mother's face. He couldn't remember the flowers she grew, the way she laughed, the sound of her voice.
All he had was the idea of a mother. The knowledge that he'd had one. The certainty that she'd loved him.
But the memory itself was gone.
Jaxon closed his eyes.
And for the first time since transmigrating, he allowed himself to cry.
