Jaxon returned to the Healing Pavilion just before sunset.
The building was quieter than before—most of the disciples had retreated to their quarters for evening meditation. Only a few servants moved through the corridors, their footsteps echoing softly against the white stone floors.
The System flickered as he approached the entrance:
[NOTIFICATION: RETURNING TO KEY LOCATION – HEALING PAVILION]
[ALVINA CASCADE – RELATIONSHIP STATUS: CONFLICTED]
[TRUST LEVEL: 12%]
[ADVICE: BE CAREFUL. SHE IS HIDING SOMETHING.]
Jaxon frowned. Hiding something. That wasn't surprising. Everyone in this sect was hiding something. But the System's warning made him uneasy.
He knocked on the door.
"Come in," Alvina's voice called out.
She was standing at her worktable, grinding herbs in a mortar. The same position as before—but this time, there was something different about her. Her silver-white hair was loose, falling past her shoulders. Her pale blue eyes were tired, shadowed with exhaustion.
"You look terrible," Jaxon said.
Alvina laughed. It was a tired sound, but genuine. "Thank you. You always know how to make a woman feel special."
"I try."
She set down the mortar and gestured to a chair. "Sit. Let me examine you before you leave."
Jaxon sat.
Alvina walked over and knelt beside him, pressing two fingers to his wrist. Her touch was cold—clinical—but there was something gentle about it too. Something almost tender.
"Your meridians are worse," she said quietly. "The miasma pools damaged them further."
"You can tell?"
"I can feel it." She closed her eyes, concentrating. "The poison is spreading faster now. You have maybe seventy chapters before complete collapse."
Seventy. That was less than before. The miasma pool had cost him more than memories—it had cost him time.
"Can you slow it down?" Jaxon asked.
"I can try." Alvina released his wrist and stood up. "But there's something I need to tell you first."
She walked to her shelf and pulled down a small wooden box. Inside was a single pill—glowing faintly with a soft blue light.
"This is a Meridian Stabilization Pill," she said. "It will slow the poison for a few days. But it's not a cure. The only true cure requires three things: Celestial Jade, Spirit Herbs from the Ember Fields, and the blood of a Nascent Soul cultivator."
"You told me that already."
"Yes. But I didn't tell you why I know so much about the poison."
Jaxon's eyes narrowed. "Why?"
Alvina took a deep breath.
"Because I created it."
The words hung in the air like a blade.
Jaxon stared at her. "You... created the poison?"
"I didn't mean to." Alvina's voice trembled. "I was young. Stupid. I wanted revenge on the Veil family—I thought they had killed my parents. So I studied forbidden texts. I learned how to make toxins that could destroy a cultivator's meridians."
She paused.
"But I never used it. I never had the chance. The original Jaxon Veil killed my family before I could act."
Jaxon's mind raced. "Then who poisoned the Veil family?"
"That's the question, isn't it?" Alvina smiled bitterly. "Someone stole my research. Someone used my poison on the Veil family's water supply. And I've spent the last three years trying to figure out who."
The System flickered.
[QUEST UPDATE: THE VEIL FAMILY m******e]
[NEW CLUE: THE POISON WAS CREATED BY ALVINA CASCADE]
[NEW CLUE: SOMEONE STOLE HER RESEARCH]
[OBJECTIVE: IDENTIFY THE THIEF]
Jaxon leaned forward. "Do you have any suspects?"
"A few." Alvina's eyes hardened. "But I can't prove anything. Not without more information."
She held out the pill.
"Take this. It will help for now. And when you get to the Ember Fields—when you find Kendra Sage—ask her who stole my research."
Jaxon took the pill. "You think she knows?"
"She's a mercenary. She knows everything." Alvina paused. "But be careful. Kendra doesn't work for free. She'll want something in return."
"What kind of something?"
"Something valuable. Something dangerous." Alvina's voice dropped. "Something you might not want to give."
Jaxon swallowed the pill.
The effect was immediate—a cool sensation spreading through his meridians, numbing the pain, slowing the decay. Not a cure, but a reprieve.
"Thank you," he said.
Alvina nodded. "Don't thank me yet. You still have to survive the Ember Fields."
"I will."
"You're confident."
"I'm a chess player." Jaxon stood up. "I don't make moves without calculating the consequences."
Alvina studied him for a long moment.
"You're different," she said softly. "The original Jaxon was arrogant. Reckless. He thought he was invincible." She paused. "You don't."
"I know I'm not invincible."
"No. You know you're vulnerable. That's why you're still alive."
She walked to the door and opened it.
"Good luck, Jaxon Veil. I hope you find what you're looking for."
Jaxon stepped into the corridor.
"Alvina," he said, turning back.
"Yes?"
"Why are you helping me? I'm wearing the face of the man who killed your family. I'm living in his body. I have his crimes."
Alvina was silent for a long moment.
"Because you're not him," she said finally. "I've spent three years hating Jaxon Veil. I've dreamed of killing him. But when I look at you..." She shook her head. "I don't see a monster. I see someone who's just as lost as I am."
She closed the door.
The System flickered.
[RELATIONSHIP UPDATE: ALVINA CASCADE – TRUST LEVEL: 18%]
[STATUS: CAUTIOUS ALLIANCE]
[ADVICE: SHE IS STILL HIDING SOMETHING.]
Jaxon stared at the closed door.
Still hiding something, he thought. But what?
He turned and walked away.
The journey to the Ember Fields would take three days.
Jaxon spent the remaining hours gathering supplies. He found a small pack in his quarters—a gift from Bastion, who had apparently prepared for the journey. Inside were dried rations, a waterskin, a map of the Ember Fields, and a small knife.
The System flickered as he packed:
[PREPARATION PHASE COMPLETE]
[QUEST: THE MATRIARCH'S TEST]
[OBJECTIVE: INVESTIGATE THE ROGUE CULTIVATOR IN THE EMBER FIELDS]
[TIME REMAINING: 5 CHAPTERS]
[DISTANCE TO EMBER FIELDS: 3 DAYS]
Jaxon sat on his bed and stared at the map.
The Ember Fields were south of Crimson Peak—a vast expanse of scorched earth and burning plains. It was a border region, contested by multiple sects. A place where outlaws gathered and mercenaries sold their services to the highest bidder.
And Kendra Sage is there, Jaxon thought. The woman who knows about the poison. The woman who might lead me to the conspiracy.
He closed his eyes.
Chess, he thought. The board is set. The pieces are moving. But the enemy king is still hidden.
The System flickered one last time:
[WARNING: HOST IS ENTERING HOSTILE TERRITORY]
[WARNING: THE HEAVENLY COURT HAS ASSETS IN THE EMBER FIELDS]
[ADVICE: TRUST NO ONE. TRUST NOTHING. SURVIVE.]
Jaxon opened his eyes.
"Always," he said.
He stood up and walked to the door.
Bastion was waiting for him outside the sect gates.
The boy looked nervous—his hands trembled, his face was pale—but there was determination in his eyes too. A fire that hadn't been there before.
"Are you ready?" Jaxon asked.
Bastion nodded. "Ready."
"Then let's go."
They walked into the perpetual twilight of Crimson Peak—past the black stone walls, past the twisted trees, past the miasma pools that bubbled and whispered in the darkness below.
The System flickered:
[JOURNEY BEGUN: THE EMBER FIELDS]
[ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 3 CHAPTERS]
[WARNING: DANGER AHEAD]
Jaxon didn't look back.
The game had begun.
