They traveled south through the night.
The Crimson Peak faded behind them, its perpetual twilight giving way to true darkness. The road was rough—little more than a dirt path carved through jagged hills and twisted forests. The air grew warmer as they walked, the cold mist of the sect replaced by dry, dusty wind.
Bastion kept pace beside him, silent and watchful. The boy had barely spoken since they'd left the gates. His eyes darted from shadow to shadow, his hand never straying far from the knife at his belt.
He's scared, Jaxon thought. Good. Fear keeps you alive.
The System flickered as they walked:
[LOCATION: OUTER TERRITORIES – SHADOW FEN SECT BORDERLANDS]
[DISTANCE TO EMBER FIELDS: 2.5 DAYS]
[THREAT LEVEL: LOW]
[ADVICE: REST WHEN POSSIBLE. THE ROAD AHEAD IS DANGEROUS.]
Jaxon ignored the advice. He couldn't afford to rest—not with only five chapters left before the Matriarch's deadline. Every hour counted.
They walked until dawn, when the sky turned from black to a dull, hazy grey. The road opened into a small clearing surrounded by dead trees. A perfect place to stop.
"We'll rest here," Jaxon said.
Bastion nodded and collapsed against a tree, his face pale with exhaustion. "I'll keep watch."
"You'll sleep. I'll keep watch."
"But—"
"I said sleep." Jaxon's voice was firm. "You're no use to me exhausted."
Bastion hesitated, then nodded. He closed his eyes and was asleep within minutes.
Jaxon sat against a rock and pulled out his pack.
The pack was old—worn leather, frayed straps, the kind of thing a disciple would use for years without replacing. Bastion had given it to him, claiming it was a spare. But as Jaxon searched through the supplies, his fingers brushed against something hard hidden in the lining.
A compartment.
He pulled it open and found a folded piece of paper.
The paper was yellowed with age, the edges frayed. The handwriting was jagged, angry—the same handwriting from the journal.
The original Jaxon's.
Jaxon's heart pounded as he unfolded the letter.
"To whoever finds this—
If you're reading this, then the ritual worked. My soul is gone, and yours has taken its place. I don't know who you are. I don't know where you came from. But I know one thing: you're probably confused, scared, and angry.
I'm sorry.
I didn't want to do this. I didn't want to drag an innocent soul into my mess. But I was desperate. I was dying. And I had one chance to make things right.
Let me explain.
My name is—was—Jaxon Veil. I was the last heir of the Veil family. My parents were murdered when I was twelve. My entire family was wiped out by a poison that destroyed their meridians. I survived because I was away at training when it happened.
I spent years trying to find out who killed them. I got close. Too close. And that's when they framed me for murdering my master.
The elders didn't believe me. Why would they? I was a demonic cultivator. A monster. A villain. They locked me away and planned to execute me.
But I had one last card to play.
There's a ritual—a forbidden technique—that can transfer a soul into another body. It requires a vessel that is compatible. A soul that has already died once. A soul from another world.
I didn't think it would work. I didn't think such a soul existed. But I performed the ritual anyway, because I had nothing left to lose.
And it worked.
You're here now. In my body. Living my life.
I don't know what kind of person you are. Maybe you're kind. Maybe you're cruel. Maybe you're just trying to survive. But I have one request:
Find out who killed my family. Find out who framed me. And make them pay.
I've hidden clues throughout the sect. In my journal. In my quarters. In the places I used to train. The truth is out there—you just have to look for it.
One more thing.
The person who helped me perform the ritual is still in the sect. They know about you. They know you're not me. And they're waiting.
Be careful who you trust.
—Jaxon Veil"
Jaxon stared at the letter for a long moment.
The original Jaxon had been a victim. A man driven to desperation by forces he couldn't control. He'd made terrible choices—demonic cultivation, murder, the soul transfer—but he'd done it all for one reason: revenge.
And now I'm carrying his burden, Jaxon thought. His revenge. His enemies. His war.
The System flickered:
[NOTIFICATION: HIDDEN LETTER DISCOVERED]
[QUEST UPDATE: THE VEIL FAMILY m******e]
[NEW INFORMATION: ORIGINAL JAXON WAS FRAMED FOR MURDER]
[NEW OBJECTIVE: FIND THE PERSON WHO HELPED WITH THE RITUAL]
[REWARD: UNKNOWN]
Jaxon folded the letter and tucked it back into the compartment.
Someone in the sect helped him, he thought. Someone who knows I'm a transmigrator. Someone who's been watching me from the shadows.
He thought of the figure he'd seen outside his window. The one who'd raised a hand in greeting—or warning.
Was that them?
He didn't know. But he intended to find out.
Bastion woke an hour later.
The boy looked better—some color had returned to his cheeks, and his hands were steadier. He sat up and rubbed his eyes.
"Anything happen while I was asleep?"
"No." Jaxon stood up and stretched. "We need to keep moving. The Ember Fields are still two days away."
Bastion nodded and stood up. He glanced at the pack. "Did you find everything you needed?"
Jaxon's eyes narrowed. "Why do you ask?"
"No reason." Bastion shrugged. "I just... I noticed you were searching through it earlier."
He's lying, Jaxon thought. He knows about the compartment.
But he didn't call the boy out. Not yet. He needed to see how the game played out.
"Let's go," he said.
They continued south.
The landscape changed as they walked. The dead trees gave way to scorched earth—black soil, cracked and dry, dotted with the remains of burned stumps. The air grew hotter, thicker, filled with the smell of ash and sulfur.
The Ember Fields, Jaxon realized. We're getting close.
The System flickered:
[LOCATION: EMBER FIELDS – OUTER BORDER]
[DISTANCE TO TARGET: 1.5 DAYS]
[WARNING: HOSTILE CULTIVATORS DETECTED WITHIN 100 METERS]
Jaxon stopped.
"What is it?" Bastion asked.
"Quiet." Jaxon's hand drifted to his knife. "We're not alone."
The Demon Sense ability—the one he'd unlocked after using the miasma pools—pulsed in the back of his mind. It detected hostile intent, a cold pressure against his consciousness.
Three of them, he thought. Maybe four. Hidden in the rocks ahead.
"Get behind me," Jaxon whispered.
Bastion obeyed.
They waited.
A moment later, three figures emerged from the shadows of a burned-out tree.
They were cultivators—rogues, by the look of their mismatched robes and scavenged weapons. Their leader was a tall woman with a scar across her face and a sword that glowed faintly with qi.
"Well, well," she said. "What do we have here? A pair of lost disciples, wandering into our territory."
Jaxon assessed them with the Threat Assessment function:
Rogue Cultivator – Foundation Establishment, Early – Threat Level: Medium
Rogue Cultivator – Qi Condensation, Layer 9 – Threat Level: Low
Rogue Cultivator – Qi Condensation, Layer 8 – Threat Level: Low
The leader is the problem, Jaxon thought. Foundation Establishment. I can't beat her in a straight fight.
He needed to play this smart.
"We're not looking for trouble," Jaxon said calmly. "We're just passing through."
"Passing through?" The woman laughed. "The Ember Fields aren't a place for 'passing through.' This is our territory. You want to cross it, you pay the toll."
"What toll?"
"Everything you've got. Your packs. Your weapons. Your cultivation pills." She smiled. "And maybe the boy, too. He looks useful."
Bastion stiffened behind him.
Jaxon kept his face blank.
Chess, he thought. What's the best move?
Option one: fight. He was Layer 8 now—stronger than before. But the leader was Foundation Establishment. He'd lose.
Option two: run. But they were faster, and the terrain was unfamiliar.
Option three: talk. Buy time. Find an opening.
"I don't have any cultivation pills," Jaxon said. "I don't have any weapons worth taking. But I do have information."
The woman raised an eyebrow. "Information?"
"I know where Kendra Sage is."
The woman's smile faltered.
Kendra Sage was a name that carried weight in the Ember Fields—a legendary mercenary, a woman who'd survived a hundred battles, a ghost who couldn't be caught. If these rogues were operating in the area, they'd know her name.
"You know where Kendra Sage is?" the woman repeated.
"I do."
"Prove it."
"I don't need to prove it. You either believe me or you don't." Jaxon shrugged. "But if you let us pass, I'll tell you where to find her. And I'll tell you something else—something that could make you very rich."
The woman's eyes narrowed. "What kind of something?"
"She's carrying something valuable. Something the Heavenly Court wants. If you find her before they do..." Jaxon let the implication hang.
The System flickered:
[BLUFF CHECK: SUCCESS]
[ROGUE CULTIVATOR – LEADER – INTEREST PIQUED]
[THREAT LEVEL REDUCED: MEDIUM → LOW]
The woman was silent for a long moment.
Then she stepped aside.
"Go," she said. "But if you're lying—if Kendra Sage isn't where you say she is—I'll find you. And I'll make you regret it."
Jaxon nodded. "She's in the western cliffs. Near the old mining ruins. She's been there for three days."
The woman's eyes widened. She knew the location.
"Go," she repeated. "Before I change my mind."
Jaxon grabbed Bastion's arm and pulled him forward.
They walked past the rogues, past the burned trees, past the scorched earth. Jaxon didn't look back.
They walked for another hour before Bastion spoke.
"How did you know where Kendra Sage is?"
"I didn't."
Bastion stopped. "What?"
"I guessed." Jaxon kept walking. "The western cliffs are the most defensible position in the Ember Fields. If I were a mercenary hiding from the Heavenly Court, that's where I'd go."
"But... what if you were wrong? What if she's not there?"
"Then we'll find out when we get there." Jaxon glanced at the boy. "But those rogues will go to the cliffs either way. If Kendra Sage is there, she'll deal with them. If she's not, they'll waste time searching. Either way, we gain an advantage."
Bastion stared at him.
"You're... you're scary, you know that?"
"I've been told."
The System flickered:
[DECEPTION SUCCESSFUL]
[REWARD: +50 CULTIVATION POINTS]
[HUMANITY GAUGE: 84%]
Jaxon frowned. The Humanity Gauge had dropped again—from 85% to 84%. A small loss, but a loss nonetheless.
The System rewards deception, he thought. It wants me to lie. To manipulate. To become the villain.
He pushed the thought aside.
They walked until nightfall, when the Ember Fields finally came into view.
The Ember Fields were exactly as the name suggested—a vast expanse of burning plains, dotted with geysers of flame and rivers of molten rock. The air shimmered with heat, and the ground glowed with an eerie orange light.
In the distance, Jaxon could see the western cliffs—a jagged line of black stone rising above the flames.
Kendra Sage, he thought. She's there. I can feel it.
The System flickered:
[LOCATION: EMBER FIELDS – MAIN TERRITORY]
[TARGET LOCATION: WESTERN CLIFFS – 4 HOURS]
[TIME REMAINING: 3 CHAPTERS]
[WARNING: MULTIPLE HOSTILE FACTIONS DETECTED IN AREA]
Jaxon turned to Bastion.
"We rest here for two hours. Then we move."
Bastion nodded. He looked exhausted—his face was pale, his hands trembling. But there was determination in his eyes.
"Jaxon," he said.
"What?"
"I just... I wanted to say thank you. For letting me come with you. For not abandoning me."
Jaxon studied the boy.
He's hiding something, the System had said. Still hiding something.
But what?
"Get some sleep," Jaxon said. "We have a long night ahead."
Bastion nodded and closed his eyes.
Jaxon sat against a rock and stared at the burning plains.
Chess, he thought. The board is set. The pieces are moving. But the enemy king is still hidden.
And I'm running out of time.
