Jaxon made his choice.
He raised his hands—slowly, palms open, the universal gesture of surrender. The knife stayed in his belt. The System's escape option flickered once, then faded.
Not yet, he told himself. Ten percent is too much. I need my memories more than I need freedom.
Ezron's smile widened. "Wise choice, Veil. Maybe you're not as stupid as you look."
The enforcers moved forward and grabbed Jaxon by the arms. Their grips were iron—cultivators at Foundation Establishment, strong enough to crush his bones if they wanted to. Jaxon didn't resist. He kept his face blank, his mind racing.
This is just another move, he told himself. The board is still in play.
"Where are you taking me?" he asked.
"To the Disciplinary Chambers," Ezron said. "The elders want to question you about your... outburst in the Obsidian Hall."
Jaxon nodded. He'd expected as much.
They marched him through the corridors of Crimson Peak—past staring disciples, past whispering servants, past the black stone walls that seemed to close in around him like a fist. The Disciplinary Chambers were in the deepest part of the sect, below the Obsidian Hall, in a section of the mountain that even the elders rarely visited.
The System flickered.
[WARNING: HOST IS ENTERING A RESTRICTED AREA]
[WARNING: THE DISCIPLINARY CHAMBERS ARE SHIELDED AGAINST SPIRITUAL SENSES]
[SYSTEM COMMUNICATION MAY BE LIMITED]
Great, Jaxon thought. Just when I need you most.
The doors to the Disciplinary Chambers opened, and Jaxon was pushed inside.
The room was circular, lit by floating orbs of pale blue light. Five elders sat in a semicircle on raised stone thrones, their faces hidden in shadow. Ezron stood to the side, his arms crossed, his expression smug.
In the center of the room was a single wooden chair.
Jaxon was forced into it.
"Jaxon Veil," a voice said—female, cold, and familiar. "You stand accused of sedition against the sect."
The speaker leaned forward, and Jaxon's breath caught.
Isolde Wynne. The Sect Matriarch.
She was older than he'd expected—perhaps fifty in appearance, though her cultivation likely made her centuries older. Her hair was silver-white, pulled back in a severe bun. Her eyes were the color of winter frost. She wore robes of deep purple, embroidered with silver thread, and she looked at Jaxon like he was a problem she'd been meaning to solve for years.
"I didn't commit sedition," Jaxon said. "I told the truth."
"The truth," Isolde repeated, "is a dangerous thing to speak in this sect."
"So I've heard."
Isolde's eyes narrowed. "You accused a member of this sect of conspiracy. You claimed that someone wanted the original Jaxon Veil to fall. Do you have proof?"
Jaxon hesitated.
Do I?
He thought of the journal hidden in his quarters. The original Jaxon's handwriting. The confession that someone had fed him forbidden techniques. But he'd left the journal behind. And even if he had it, would the elders believe a dead man's diary?
"I have my suspicions," Jaxon said carefully. "Based on... observation."
"Observation," Isolde said flatly. "You expect us to act on observations?"
"I expect you to investigate," Jaxon said. "If I'm wrong, you can execute me. But if I'm right..." He paused. "If I'm right, there's a traitor in this sect. Someone who's been manipulating events for years. Someone who wanted a villain to exist."
The room was silent.
Isolde leaned back. Her expression was unreadable.
"You are clever, Jaxon Veil," she said finally. "Cleverer than the original, I think. That is... interesting."
Jaxon's heart skipped a beat.
She knows.
"However," Isolde continued, "cleverness is not innocence. You are still a convicted murderer. You are still a demonic cultivator. And you are still, by every measure that matters, a villain."
She stood up.
"I will not execute you," she said. "Not yet. But you will be confined to your quarters. You will not leave without permission. And you will complete a task for me—a task that will prove your loyalty, or seal your fate."
The System flickered. Even in the shielded chamber, a faint notification appeared:
[NEW MAIN QUEST: THE MATRIARCH'S TEST]
[OBJECTIVE: COMPLETE A TASK FOR ISOLDE WYNNE]
[REWARD: ACCESS TO THE HEALING PAVILION]
[PENALTY: EXECUTION]
Jaxon swallowed. "What task?"
Isolde smiled. It was not a kind smile.
"There is a rogue cultivator in the Ember Fields," she said. "He has been stealing sect resources. I want you to find him, discover who he's working for, and bring me proof."
Jaxon frowned. "You're sending me? A damaged Qi Condensation cultivator? Against a rogue?"
"You are expendable," Isolde said simply. "And if you succeed, I will consider your claims about a conspiracy. If you fail..." She shrugged. "Then you were never worth my time anyway."
The enforcers released Jaxon's arms.
He stood up slowly.
"You're using me," he said.
"Yes," Isolde agreed. "And you will let me. Because the alternative is death."
Jaxon met her eyes. She was a chess player too—he could see it in the way she moved, the way she spoke, the way she'd already calculated every possible outcome.
But so was he.
"I'll do it," he said.
Isolde nodded. "Good. You leave at dawn."
The enforcers escorted Jaxon back to his quarters. Ezron walked ahead, his shoulders stiff with barely contained anger. He'd wanted Jaxon executed. He'd wanted the satisfaction of watching the villain die.
Jaxon smiled to himself. Another piece blocked.
The door to his quarters closed, and Jaxon was alone again.
The System flickered.
[QUEST ACCEPTED: THE MATRIARCH'S TEST]
[OBJECTIVE: INVESTIGATE THE ROGUE CULTIVATOR IN THE EMBER FIELDS]
[TIME LIMIT: 7 CHAPTERS]
[REWARD: ACCESS TO HEALING PAVILION + 300 CULTIVATION POINTS]
[BONUS OBJECTIVE: DISCOVER THE ROGUE'S EMPLOYER]
[BONUS REWARD: UNKNOWN]
Jaxon sat on his bed and stared at the screen.
Seven chapters. Seven days.
He had one week to find a rogue cultivator, discover a conspiracy, and survive. All while his meridians were slowly collapsing and the System was eating his memories.
And I still haven't visited the Healing Pavilion, he realized. I don't even know if Alvina will help me.
The System flickered again.
[NOTIFICATION: SYSTEM TUTORIAL NOW AVAILABLE]
[WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACTIVATE TUTORIAL MODE?]
[WARNING: TUTORIAL MODE WILL REVEAL ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS]
[WARNING: TUTORIAL MODE MAY REVEAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORIGINAL JAXON VEIL]
Jaxon hesitated.
Tutorial mode. It sounded like something from a video game. Something helpful. But the System had already shown that it wasn't a friend. It was a tool—and tools could cut both ways.
"What do I lose?" he asked aloud.
The System responded immediately:
[TUTORIAL MODE DOES NOT REQUIRE MEMORY PAYMENT]
[TUTORIAL MODE IS A STANDARD FUNCTION]
[HOST WILL NOT BE CHARGED FOR THIS ACTIVATION]
Jaxon raised an eyebrow. "No charge? That's suspicious."
[TUTORIAL MODE IS DESIGNED TO ASSIST HOSTS IN SURVIVAL]
[WITHOUT TUTORIAL MODE, HOST'S SURVIVAL PROBABILITY IS 3.7%]
[WITH TUTORIAL MODE, HOST'S SURVIVAL PROBABILITY IS 12.4%]
"Twelve percent," Jaxon muttered. "Those are terrible odds."
[HOST'S ODDS ARE TERRIBLE REGARDLESS]
[TUTORIAL MODE MERELY IMPROVES THEM MARGINALLY]
Jaxon laughed. It was a bitter, hollow sound. "Fine. Activate tutorial mode."
The System screen flickered, and suddenly the world around Jaxon shifted.
Information flooded his vision—not overwhelming, but comprehensive. The room around him was now overlayed with data. The stone walls had labels: Crimson Peak Stone – Grade 3 Spiritual Material. The broken altar had a tag: Abandoned Worship Site – Residual Qi: Minimal. The window showed the courtyard below, where disciples moved with labels floating above their heads.
Disciple (Outer) – Qi Condensation, Layer 4 – Threat Level: Low
Disciple (Inner) – Foundation Establishment, Early – Threat Level: Medium
Ezron Ashbrook – Foundation Establishment, Peak – Threat Level: High
Jaxon's eyes widened. "You can see cultivation levels?"
[TUTORIAL MODE ACTIVATED]
[FUNCTION 1: THREAT ASSESSMENT]
[SYSTEM CAN NOW IDENTIFY THE CULTIVATION REALM OF ANY TARGET]
[WARNING: HIGHER-REALM CULTIVATORS MAY BLOCK THIS ABILITY]
Jaxon nodded slowly. "That's useful. What else?"
[FUNCTION 2: MISSION TRACKER]
[SYSTEM CAN NOW PROVIDE DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT ACTIVE QUESTS]
[INCLUDING OPTIONAL OBJECTIVES AND HIDDEN PATHS]
The screen shifted, showing a detailed breakdown of the Matriarch's Test:
MAIN OBJECTIVE: Investigate the Rogue Cultivator in the Ember Fields
Location: Ember Fields – 3 Days' Travel South of Crimson Peak
Target: Unknown (Information Incomplete)
Suggested Approach: Gather Intelligence First
OPTIONAL OBJECTIVE 1: Visit the Healing Pavilion Before Departing
Reward: Meridian Assessment + Potential Healing
OPTIONAL OBJECTIVE 2: Investigate the Miasma Pools
Reward: Information about the Original Jaxon's Deal
WARNING: HIGH RISK – NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CURRENT REALM
Jaxon frowned. "Optional objectives. That's new."
[FUNCTION 3: RELATIONSHIP TRACKER]
[SYSTEM CAN NOW DISPLAY THE HOST'S RELATIONSHIP STATUS WITH KEY INDIVIDUALS]
The screen flickered, and a new list appeared:
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
Isolde Wynne (Sect Matriarch) – Status: Suspicious Tolerance – Trust Level: 5%
Ezron Ashbrook (Discipline Hall Enforcer) – Status: Active Hostility – Trust Level: 0%
Arctus Fenwick (Senior Disciple) – Status: Unknown – Trust Level: Unavailable
Alvina Cascade (Healer) – Status: Unknown – Trust Level: Unavailable
Dalton Ravenspur (Righteous Alliance) – Status: Enemy – Trust Level: 0%
Felis Mordain (Sect Elder) – Status: Unknown – Trust Level: Unavailable
Jaxon studied the list. "Arctus Fenwick. Felis Mordain. I haven't met them yet."
[RELATIONSHIP TRACKER WILL UPDATE UPON FIRST CONTACT]
[ADDITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WILL BE ADDED AS HOST ENCOUNTERS THEM]
Jaxon nodded. "Okay. What's the last function?"
The System paused. For a moment, the screen was blank.
Then:
[FUNCTION 4: MEMORY VAULT]
[SYSTEM CAN NOW DISPLAY A LIST OF MEMORIES THAT HAVE BEEN CONSUMED]
[WARNING: VIEWING CONSUMED MEMORIES MAY CAUSE PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS]
Jaxon's breath caught. "Show me."
The screen flickered, and a list appeared:
CONSUMED MEMORIES:
1. First Kiss – High School – Status: Permanently Lost
2. [Locked] – Requires Further Missions to Unlock
3. [Locked] – Requires Further Missions to Unlock
4. [Locked] – Requires Further Missions to Unlock
Jaxon stared at the list.
Permanently lost.
He'd known it was gone. He'd felt the absence. But seeing it written out—First Kiss – Permanently Lost—made it real in a way that hurt more than he'd expected.
"There's no way to get it back?" he asked.
[CONSUMED MEMORIES CANNOT BE RECOVERED]
[THE SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE A RESTORATION FUNCTION]
[MEMORIES ARE THE FUEL FOR HOST'S CULTIVATION]
[WITHOUT FUEL, THE SYSTEM CANNOT FUNCTION]
Jaxon closed his eyes.
So I'm trading pieces of my soul for power. And the System doesn't even apologize for it.
He opened his eyes and looked at the screen again.
"How many memories do I have left?" he asked.
[ESTIMATED MEMORY BANK: 10,000+ FRAGMENTS]
[AT CURRENT RATE OF CONSUMPTION, HOST WILL RETAIN 50% OF MEMORIES AFTER 100 MISSIONS]
[HOST WILL RETAIN 10% OF MEMORIES AFTER 300 MISSIONS]
[HOST WILL BECOME A HOLLOW SHELL AFTER 500 MISSIONS]
Jaxon did the math. The story was 130 chapters long. If he completed one mission per chapter, he'd lose roughly 130 memories by the end. That was 1.3% of his total memory bank. Not catastrophic—but not nothing.
The problem was the penalties. The System had offered him escape options that cost 10% of his humanity. If he took those options, he'd burn through his memories much faster.
I need to avoid penalties, he realized. I need to complete missions cleanly, without taking shortcuts.
But shortcuts were the only way to survive in this world.
Chess, he thought. Sacrifice the pawn to save the king. But what if the pawn is my soul?
The System flickered.
[TUTORIAL MODE COMPLETE]
[ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS WILL UNLOCK AS HOST PROGRESSES]
[ADVICE: VISIT THE HEALING PAVILION BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE EMBER FIELDS]
[ADVICE: DO NOT TRUST THE MIASMA POOLS]
[ADVICE: SOMEONE IS WATCHING YOU.]
Jaxon's head snapped up.
"Someone is watching me?"
The System didn't respond.
He walked to the window and looked out. The courtyard was empty now—the disciples had retreated to their quarters for the night. The perpetual twilight had deepened into something closer to true darkness.
But there, at the edge of the courtyard, a figure stood in the shadows.
Watching.
Jaxon's hand drifted to his knife.
The figure didn't move. Didn't speak. Just stood there, a silhouette against the black stone, as still as a statue.
Then, slowly, the figure raised a hand.
A gesture. A greeting? A warning?
Jaxon couldn't tell.
The figure turned and walked away, disappearing into the darkness.
The System flickered.
[NOTIFICATION: UNKNOWN OBSERVER DETECTED]
[IDENTITY: UNKNOWN]
[THREAT LEVEL: UNKNOWN]
[ADVICE: BE CAREFUL.]
Jaxon stood at the window for a long time, staring into the night.
Someone is watching me.
Someone knows I'm not the original.
And someone wants me to know they know.
He turned away from the window and sat on his bed.
Tomorrow, he would visit the Healing Pavilion. He would meet Alvina Cascade—the woman who knew his secret. He would find out if she was a threat or an ally.
And then he would leave for the Ember Fields.
Seven chapters, he thought. Seven days to prove myself. Seven days to survive.
He closed his eyes.
Sleep didn't come easily.
