The man he could never be
Chapter 6– The Fields
The evening sky was turning gold when Kayla walked out toward the fields.
Tall grass swayed in the wind.
The countryside felt endless.
Quiet.
Peaceful.
She hugged her arms around herself, trying to calm the strange feeling in her chest.
Alexander Carter was dangerous.
Not in a violent way.
In a pull-you-closer-without-touching-you kind of way.
Footsteps sounded behind her.
She didn’t turn around.
“You followed me.”
Alexander stopped beside her.
“I own the land you’re standing on.”
Kayla smirked slightly.
“Fair.”
They stood side by side looking over the fields.
After a moment Kayla said quietly,
“You didn’t have to do all this.”
Alexander glanced at her.
“Yes, I did.”
Kayla looked up at him.
“Why?”
Alexander took a slow breath.
“Because someone should have.”
His voice was softer now.
Kayla looked back at the horizon.
“You know… you’re not what I expected.”
“What did you expect?”
“Daniel always talked about you like you were strict and cold.”
Alexander gave a small smile.
“I’m strict.”
Kayla laughed.
“I believe that.”
The wind lifted strands of her hair.
Alexander watched her quietly.
“You deserve someone who protects you,” he said.
Kayla turned toward him.
“And you’re volunteering?”
Alexander’s green eyes darkened slightly.
“Yes.”
The word was simple.
Certain.
Kayla’s pulse jumped again.
“Alexander…”
He stepped closer.
Not touching.
But close enough that she could feel the heat from his body.
“You should go inside,” she said softly.
“Why?”
Kayla looked at his chest instead of his eyes.
“Because this feels like a bad idea.”
Alexander’s voice was low.
“Some bad ideas are worth it.”
Kayla finally looked up at him.
For a moment neither of them moved.
The tension between them felt electric.
Then Kayla stepped back.
“Goodnight, Alexander.”
She walked back toward the house quickly.
Alexander watched her go.
His jaw tightening slightly.
Because he knew something Kayla didn’t yet realize.
He wasn’t the type of man who walked away from something he wanted.
