The man he could never be. Chapter 2 – Alexander’s House Kayla expected Alexander’s house to look like Daniel’s place. Messy. Loud. Careless. It wasn’t. The truck turned off the main road and drove deeper into the countryside. The fields stretched for miles, the moonlight washing over them in silver waves. Finally, a large iron gate appeared ahead. Alexander pressed a button on the dashboard and the gates slowly opened. Kayla raised an eyebrow. “Well… someone’s doing better than their son.” Alexander didn’t look at her. “I work for what I have.” The driveway curved through tall trees before revealing the house. Kayla’s eyes widened. It wasn’t just a house. It was a massive ranch-style estate, modern but still warm, lights glowing from tall windows. “Wow,” she whispered. Alexander parked the truck. Neither of them moved for a moment. Kayla suddenly felt awkward. “This is… really nice.” Alexander stepped out of the truck and walked around to her side, opening the door. “You’ll have your own room.” Kayla climbed out slowly. “I wasn’t planning on staying long.” Alexander shut the truck door. “You’ll stay as long as you need.” His voice left very little room for argument. Inside, the house was quiet. Dark wood floors. Soft lighting. Large windows overlooking endless fields. Kayla walked slowly through the living room. “You live here alone?” “Yes.” “No girlfriend?” Alexander gave a small, almost amused exhale. “No.” Kayla turned toward him. “Why not?” Alexander shrugged. “Never found someone worth the time.” Something about the way he said it made Kayla feel strangely aware of herself. Alexander gestured down the hallway. “Your room’s this way.” He opened a door. The guest room was bigger than Kayla’s entire apartment back home. Soft grey sheets. A balcony overlooking the countryside. Kayla blinked. “You call this a guest room?” Alexander leaned casually against the doorframe. “You deserve something comfortable tonight.” Kayla laughed quietly. “You barely know me.” Alexander’s eyes rested on her. “I know enough.” For a moment the room felt smaller. Warmer. Kayla looked away first. “Well… thank you.” Alexander nodded once. “If you need anything, my room is down the hall.” Kayla raised an eyebrow. “That sounds slightly threatening.” For the first time that night, Alexander actually smiled. It changed his entire face. “Get some sleep, Kayla.”
