THE OFFER

Chapter Ten: The Offer Richard Cole found Elena alone, which she suspected was not an accident. She was leaving a supplier meeting downtown, arms full of fabric samples for the Foundation gala, when a black car pulled alongside the curb and a voice she didn't recognize… smooth, expensively bored called her name. "Ms. Reyes. A moment of your time." Elena had never met Damian's uncle in person, but she recognized him instantly from the family portrait in Margaret's sunroom , the same sharp Cole jaw, none of the warmth that made it work on Damian, all of it replaced with something calculating. "Mr. Cole," she said carefully, not approaching the car. "I don't believe we've been introduced." "Richard," he said, stepping out onto the sidewalk instead, buttoning his jacket with unhurried precision. "I thought it was time we spoke, given that you'll soon be family. Assuming, of course, that this arrangement makes it that far." "I'm not sure what there is to discuss." "I think you know exactly what there is to discuss." Richard's smile didn't reach his eyes. "My nephew is a very controlled man, Ms. Reyes, but controlled men make exceptions for the right pressure applied in the right places. I'd like to offer you an alternative to whatever arrangement you've made with him. A generous one. Considerably more generous, I might add, than whatever settlement he's promised you, and with none of the inconvenience of an actual wedding, or the scrutiny that comes with marrying into this family. Elena felt something cold settle in her stomach, though she kept her face carefully neutral. "You're offering me money to leave." "I'm offering you a clean exit from a situation that was never going to end well for you regardless. My nephew doesn't know how to keep people. Ask his last fiancée." Richard reached into his jacket and produced a folded check, holding it out like it was nothing more than a business card. "Consider it compensation for your time. Walk away quietly before the six months are up, let the will's condition lapse, and this figure is yours. No lawyers, no press, no complications." Elena looked at the check without taking it. She didn't need to see the number to know it would be significant Richard Cole didn't strike her as a man who negotiated in small figures. "And if I say no?" "Then I imagine we'll be seeing quite a bit more of each other before this is over," Richard said, an edge finally showing beneath the polish, "and I promise you, Ms. Reyes, I am considerably less pleasant to deal with in that scenario." Elena thought of the venue her father built, seventeen days from foreclosure when this had started, and how much simpler her life would be with that check in her hand and no contract, no cameras, no risk of loving a man who might never trust anyone enough to stay. She thought of Damian on the anniversary of the worst day of his life, holding her hand like it was the only solid thing left in the room. "I don't want your money, Mr. Cole," Elena said, and was surprised by how steady her voice came out. "I signed a contract, and I intend to honor it. Whatever else happens between your nephew and me is none of your business, and it's certainly not for sale." Something flickered across Richard's face … not quite anger, closer to recalculation, the look of a man revising a plan he'd been confident of a moment ago. "That's an unwise decision," he said, folding the check back into his jacket. "I do hope you don't come to regret it." He got back into the car without another word, and Elena stood on the sidewalk for a long moment after it pulled away, arms still full of fabric samples, heart pounding with an adrenaline that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with the fact that she'd meant every word. She didn't tell Damian. Not that night, not the next day. She told herself it was because she didn't want to give Richard the satisfaction of causing a rift, that handling it herself was the stronger choice. She would come to regret the silence far more than the refusal.
