My name is Athina Williams. I'm 19 years old, and my life has been forever changed by the recent loss of my father. But as I stand here, I'm taking a crucial step forward - I'm on my way to New York College, ready to embark on this new chapter of my life.
As I exited the vehicle and entered the New York College campus, the cool fall air carried the murmurs of both excitement and anxiety. Karen, my mother, gave me a little luggage with a feeble smile. Karen replied, "Here, sweetie, don't forget your favorite blanket," with a little shudder in her voice. I gave her a tight hug as tears filled her eyes. "Don't worry, Mom. I swear. I'm available via phone at any time. Karen nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "I'll do it, sweetie. I'll give you a call each day. Keep yourself safe and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
I could sense the weight of my mother's sorrow as we hugged. Six months had passed since my father's death and She was still having a hard time accepting the loss. Although I was aware of my mother's efforts to appear strong, I could feel the anguish and sorrow that were hidden beneath the surface. I watched as her car faded into the distance as Karen drove off. Although leaving my mother behind made me feel guilty, I realized that this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. I was committed to making the most of my time at one of the top universities in the nation, New York College. After inhaling deeply, I turned and headed for the student union building. I had to obtain my student ID and register for my hostel accommodation. While, walking,I was unable to suppress my feelings of anxiety and excitement. My life had entered a new phase, and I was prepared to face any obstacles that could arise. I heard laughing and conversations as I walked into the student union building. I walked over to the registration counter, where a helpful employee welcomed me. "Hey there! Greetings from New York College. I'm here to assist you with the hostel room registration process. Could you please show me your admissions letter? The staff member promptly completed my registration once I gave her my admittance document. While I waited, I couldn't help but notice different students in groups mingling and laughing with one another. I sensed a feeling of isolation, questioning whether I would be able to meet others here. At that moment, a voice behind me yelled out. "Athina! Is that you, my god? When I turned around, she saw a number of people she knew from high school. Mike, Emily, Chris, and Natalie, her childhood closest friend, were present. It seems like a number of students from her school had chosen New York college well what do we expect as it is one of the best colleges in the country. They talked about their summer vacations and how much they had missed one another, they all hurried over to give me hugs. I had a wave of relief as we caught up. It appeared that I was just nervous for nothing. I had been so concerned about making friends not knowing that my friends were already here. Natalie, who was always the most sympathetic member of the group, observed that Athina seems somewhat reserved. With worry on her face, she said, "Hey, Athina, are you okay?" "I'm sorry about the loss of your father. How difficult this must be for you,I am so sorry" As I gave Natalie a firm hug, a knot started to develop in my throat. "I'm grateful, Nat. That is really important to me. You know, I'm just trying to be strong for my mother." Natalie gave a sympathetic nod. "Athina, we're all here for you. You're not by yourself. As we embraced, I was filled with gratitude for my friends. I knew I could rely on them to help me get through the difficult times ahead because they had always been there for me even though it was Natalie I was closest with. They all agreed to accompany me to my hostel room.We happily discussed our intentions for the semester as we strolled even though I listened more than talking. They were sharing their laughter and smiles, but I was unable to get rid of the melancholy that pervaded my heart. They assisted me in unpacking and settling in as we arrived at my room. I was given a small gift bag by Natalie. 'Hey Athina" Natalie said "I got you something to welcome you to college,"She gave me a small bag and I opened it to discover a lovely silver necklace with a tiny crystal pendant. With a gasp of excitement, I gave Natalie a close hug. "Thank you, Natalie, thank you everyone. This means a lot to me,your help, Natalie's gift, thank you guys so much. I feel blessed. I feel so thankful as my friends were ready to depart. At least I didn't have to go through the stress of unpacking as my friends already did that for me.
As they left, I closed the door behind them and took a deep breath. I looked around my new room, feeling a sense of excitement and nervousness. This was a new chapter and I was so excited for what was to come.
