Aria's POV 21

1628 Words
I looked up into the most handsome face in the hall, with blonde hair and the most striking eyes that had ever locked onto mine. "Alpha Kael?" I stammered, my voice shaky and uneven. I blinked at him in confusion. "What are you doing here? I thought you said you weren't going to attend the ball." He raised an eyebrow, his lips curving into a subtle, dangerous smirk. "Plans change." “ Interesting,” I said giving him a smile. “ I didn't think you were the type to drink." "Well, neither did I," I admitted, regaining my balance and stepping back to stand properly in front of him. "My old self could handle more than two glasses of wine." "Your old self?" "Yes, I..." My hand flew over my mouth before my mind could register what I had almost blurted out. I swallowed hard and quickly covered my mistake. "I mean, I haven't had a drink in a very long time. The old me wouldn't have gotten drunk on just a little bit of wine." "Then drink some more to bring back your old self," Kael replied softly. I giggled at his statement, feeling the lighthearted warm buzz in my chest as if he were flirting with me. "Maybe next time." "In that case," Kael said, lowering his voice slightly, "may I please have a dance with you?" I looked around the grand hall, pointing a finger at my own chest in sheer confusion. "You want to dance with me?" "Yes," Kael said, keeping his dark gaze on me. "Any problem with that?" There wasn't a problem, except for the fact that I didn't want to draw unnecessary attention to myself from the rest of the room. I was eighty-five percent certain that every single un-mated female attending the ball would fight or even kill just to dance with the Alpha. "No, it's just that..." I trailed off. "I'm not taking no for an answer," Kael said smoothly. He reached out for my hand and began leading the way toward the dance floor, but before we could take two steps, I felt a firm tug on my other wrist. I spun around and saw Damian standing there, looking as handsome as always. For a second, my drunk brain almost drooled. "Ooh la la," I found myself saying out loud before I could stop the words. Damian ignored my little slip, keeping his sharp focus on his brother. "Where are you taking my date?" Kael turned around slowly. "Your date? I found her standing on her own. It didn't look like she had one, but now she does." "I hate to break it to you," Damian replied, stepping closer, "but you'll need to find yourself someone else. You weren't supposed to be here anyways.” "I am the Alpha. I can do whatever I want," Kael said coldly, taking a step toward Damian while my hand remained firmly in his grip. I looked back and forth between the two massive, powerful brothers. "Are you guys fighting over me?" I asked, giggling softly. "Aria, you're coming with me," Damian said, stepping straight up into Kael's personal space until they were face to face. They really were fighting over me, and the sheer ridiculousness of the sight almost made me want to squeal. But as I took a quick glance around us, my breath caught in my throat. Almost everyone in the hall had stopped talking, their eyes wide as they watched the Alpha and Beta stand head-to-head with my hands still held in theirs. "Um... Damian," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the swelling music. "Damian, everyone is looking at us..." "That's not my problem," Damian said calmly, never breaking eye contact with Kael. "I just want to take my date with me, which shouldn't be a problem, right, Kael?" The two of them stood frozen, their gazes intense and dangerous. A low growl suddenly erupted from deep inside Kael's chest. Then without another word, he abruptly let go of my hand. I figured the two of them were mind-linking, but what could Damian have possibly said to make Kael back off so easily? "Let's go, Aria," Damian said softly, giving my hand a gentle squeeze to get my attention as Kael turned on his heel and walked away into the crowd. "What was that about?" I asked, looking back over my shoulder. "Don't worry about it," Damian murmured, guiding me through the onlookers. "I'm sorry for being late. I had some urgent work to take care of, but I hope Kael wasn't bothering you." "Nooooo," I said, waving my free hand softly. "He just wanted to dance." Damian stopped near the edge of the room. "Here, take this." He stretched out his palm, showing me a small yellow pill. "What is this... is it candy?" "No," Damian said with a slight chuckle, "but it will help you sober up in about five minutes." I took the pill, swallowed it and within moments, it worked like pure magic. The muffled quality in my ears vanished, my head cleared and the room stopped spiraling around me. I blinked, looking at him in awe. "How did you do that?" "Don't worry about it," Damian winked. He held out his hand, bowing slightly. " I'm sorry I took a long time to come back, but I can tell that you were having fun.” “ Yeah ,I did have fun… just don't do that again.” “ Of course, I promise I'll make it up to you. May I please have the honor of dancing with you, Miss Aria?" "Of course," I smiled. He took my hand and led me onto the middle of the dance floor. The eyes of the entire room followed us as if a crime scene had just taken place. We faced each other, and I felt a faint flutter in my stomach. He placed both of his hands gently on my waist and I rested mine on his broad shoulders. I looked up at him, trying to meet his eyes, when a smudge at the corner of his jawline caught my attention. It was a plum-colored stain. At first, I thought it was a small bruise from training, but when I looked closer…it wasn't a bruise , it was lipstick Was that the important business he had to go handle? The music swelled, and our bodies began to move smoothly in sync with the rhythm. "I must admit, you're a great dancer," Damian said, breaking the silence with a smooth smile. "What else are you hiding from me?" I offered a small smile, but for some reason, it didn't quite reach my eyes. "I'm not hiding anything." "You look really good in amethyst," he added, his eyes sweeping over my gown. "It suits you." "Plum lipstick looks good on you too," I replied casually. "It suits you." Damian paused mid-step. "Lipstick?” "Right here," I said, lifting my fingers to gently swipe across the stain on his jaw, showing him the dark residue on my skin. His face instantly flushed dark red with pure embarrassment. I let out a soft laugh. "Looks like Beta Damian has a girlfriend or maybe even found his mate.” "Oh no... it's not like that," Damian stammered, quickly trying to rub his jaw clean. "Don't worry," I cut in gently before he could stumble over more excuses. "You don't have to explain yourself to me." Damian stared down at me for a long moment, his expression becoming unreadable and surprisingly serious. Then, out of nowhere, he asked a deeply random question. "Do you like powerful men, Aria? Like Kael and me?" I furrowed my brows, thoroughly confused. "What do you mean?" "I've noticed you and Kael have been getting a little close lately," Damian said, his voice dropping low. "Are you attracted to men of power?" Men of power? Not necessarily. But Kael? A hundred percent yes. Still, I couldn't wrap my head around why Damian was suddenly asking me something like this. "I wouldn't say men of power," I answered honestly, stepping back slightly in his grip. "Plus, he and I aren't close at all. He just caught me when I was drunk and about to fall." "If Kael wanted to have an affair with you... would you accept it?" A wave of intense discomfort washed over me. "Why would you ask me something like that, Damian?" "Is that a yes or a no?" he pressed, his eyes searching my face. “ Why on earth would you think I'd want to have an affair with the Alpha…is that what you think of me or is it because I'm an omega and we're low lives huh?” “ No, that's not what I meant. It's just —” "Damian, I think I've had enough for tonight… I would like to take my leave now," I said firmly, pulling my hands away from his shoulders. "Thank you for inviting me, but I don't think I want to be here anymore, please tell the driver to pick me up.” He insisted on walking me out to the main doors, but I politely declined wanting to be away from his weird questions. "Don't be late for training tomorrow," Damian called out as I turned away. I made my way out of the grand hall and started walking through the quiet stone corridors toward the car park. But on my way down the hallway, I froze. Sitting in a dim corner was Kael. I paused my chest tightening. It made no sense, the ceremonial Mate pairing was about to start in the main hall, and since he was here, he had to be present. Why was he sitting out here alone in the dark?
