"Aria… Aria!" Natalie patted my shoulder aggressively. "What are you thinking about that you can’t even hear me?" I looked up at her irritated face. "What is it?"
"We don’t have enough time to finish getting ready," Natalie said, throwing her hands up in the air.
"Do I really have to Nat ?" I asked, my tone completely uninterested.
"Yes, you do," Natalie insisted. "Beta Damian won’t spare me if you don’t attend."
Finally, the day had arrived. It was the night of the Celestial Mate Ball—the biggest event of the season, where wolves in the pack gathered to celebrate and find their mates. And it was also the exact night Kael and I had met and become mates years ago.
Natalie got straight to work. She curled my hair into soft waves that fell over my shoulders, dabbed a bit of makeup on my face, and helped me slip into the dress and some comfortable heels and golden jewelry.
When I stood in front of the full-length mirror, I gasped. The rich purple fabric hugged my curves, making my skin look luminous. Ilooked stunning. To be honest, even in my past life as Lydia, I wouldn’t have looked that great in a dress like this. For some reason, I started to feel like Damian was slowly boosting my confidence, piece by piece.
Then I looked down, my smile fading. "What if I embarrass him?" I muttered.
Natalie rolled her eyes. "Aria, you look like royalty…You are not going to embarrass anyone, unless you want to.”
"You don't understand, Natalie," I argued softly. "I'm just an omega…What will people say when they see Beta Damian walking in with a servant?"
"They won't even know you're one and they'll say he's the luckiest man in the room," Natalie shot back with a huge grin.
Before I could object again, there was a knock at the door. Natalie went to chek who it was. D amian was standing there, looking incredibly breathtaking in a tailored black suit. Natalie instantly smiled like crazy, stepping back to let him see me.
Damian’s eyes swept over me, freezing for a long second. A genuine smirk touched his lips. "You look absolutely stunning Aria."
My face flushed warm and I looked away, blushing under his intense gaze.
"We should get going, everyone needs to see this beauty,” Damian said softly, holding out his arm. I put my hand into his and a wave of warmth surged through me.
The driver brought the car around and took us straight to the venue. As we pulled up to the grand estate, my chest tightened. I remembered this place so well. Step by step, as we walked toward the entrance, memories flashed back into my mind. I remembered the night Kael and I felt our mate bond snap into place, how warm and safe it made me feel, how we danced under the sparkling chandeliers, how magical everything had felt and how deeply in love I had been.
But now, all of that was gone.
"Are you okay?" Damian asked, noticing my stiff posture.
"Yes, I'm fine," I lied, keeping my eyes on the floor.
Damian squeezed my hand gently. "Don't think too much about it, okay, just enjoy the night."
I nodded, though I wasn't in the moment…my mind was somewhere else entirely, lost in ghosts of the past.
We stepped through the massive double doors into the grand hall. I braced myself for the worst, expecting sneers, disgust,l and cruel whispers. But as people turned to look at us, no one said a harsh word. Nobody looked disgusted. In fact, people were staring in admiration. I paused, wondering if all the embarrassment and negativity had just been in my head the whole time.
Suddenly, Damian’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, checked the screen and picked it up. After listening for a few seconds, his face grew serious.
He hung up and turned to me. " Aria, I'll be right back, I need to take care of something."
My eyes widened in panic. " What? No you can't leave me alone here.”
"It's a bit important, I promise I won't be long," Damian said reassuringly.
Before I could grab his sleeve, he disappeared into the crowd, leaving me stuck right in the middle of a massive sea of high-ranking wolves.
Surprisingly, it wasn't so bad. As I stood near the edge of the room, several guests approached me.
"Your dress is absolutely stunning dear," an older noblewoman gushed.
"Where did Beta Damian find you? You look like a vision," a high-ranking warrior remarked with a polite bow.
"That color was made for you," another woman chimed in with a warm smile.
Time flew by as the music swelled. One hour passed, then two, and still, there was no sign of Damian. Great , he had brought me there as his date when he was nowhere to be seen.
A waiter passed by with a tray of expensive sparklinh drinks and I was tempted to have some. I grabbed a glass and drank the first one to calm my nerves. Then a second glass. By the third glass, a warm buzz washed over me, and I started to feel funny, confident and bubbly.
When the fourth and fifth glasses were empty and Damian was still nowhere to be seen, I shrugged my shoulders. f**k it, I thought with a giggly grin.
I threw caution to the wind and went right into the center of the crowd to mingle. The upbeat music took over, and I started to dance, spinning around and laughing as the alcohol completely took control of my body. I was officially drunk.
The entire hall began to tilt and spin like a roller-coaster. I was having the time of my life until I took a wild step forward, completely losing my balance as the floor spiraled beneath my feet. I gasped, tumbling sideways, fully expecting to hit the hard marble floor.
Before I crashed down, a pair of strong, solid arms caught me around the waist, pulling my back right against a warm chest.
A deep, smooth voice rumbled right by my ear "The tables have turned. Look who's drunk tonight."
