I carefully adjusted the purple gown over my arm, smoothing down the soft fabric. "Thank you so much for helping us narrow down our options. That dress suits you and your attitude.”
With that, Natalie and I turned around and started strolling toward the front counter to pay. A second later, complete chaos erupted in the store behind us.
"What the f**k?” her angry voice echoed off the walls. "Stop her…I want that dress
Now!”
One of the young sales workers nervously approached her, wringing her hands together. "Miss Selene, the young lady has already selected that item..."
"I don't care!” she shrieked, stomping her foot on the rug. “ I don't care…you better get me that dress and alter it to my size. People like her don't deserve to wear such things.”
"Unfortunately, we cannot force a customer to give up an item they are buying—"
Selene took a long, menacing step forward, her dark eyes flashing dangerously. The poor sales worker immediately shrank back, her cheeks draining of all color.
The smile that spread across Selene's face was genuinely terrifying. "I wonder what you would look like if I called my father to have you fired and made sure that you would never work anywhere else.”
The worker's jaw trembled in complete fear. "I..."
"Exactly," she snapped, pushing right past her.
Selene stood near the center aisle and watched us the entire time we paid at the counter. Her icy glare followed us all the way out the heavy glass door. If looks could kill, Natalie and I would have dropped dead right on the sidewalk.
The second the store door clicked shut behind us, Natalie burst into loud, uncontrollable laughter, holding her stomach as we walked down the street.
"Oh my goddess!" she wheezed, wiping a tear from her eye.
I couldn't help laughing along with her, the relief bubbling up in my chest. "Did you see her face when I grabbed the purple one?"
"I thought her head was going to explode right then and there!" Natalie giggled.
We spent the entire walk back to the car park where the driver was waiting to take us back to the pack house. These were the types of laughs I used to have with Natalie when I was Lydia… and just laughing with her made the heavy dark cloud over my head felt lighter, and I felt genuinely happy.
Unfortunately, that peaceful feeling vanished into thin air the moment we got back to pack house.
Damian was already standing near the entrance, leaning against the stone wall with his arms folded across his broad chest. The second his eyes caught us, his gaze dropped straight down to the dark garment bag hanging in my hands.
"Did you find something?" he asked, pushing off the wall and walking over to us.
I nodded, trying to calm my sudden racing heart. "Yes we did."
He reached out and took the bag from my hands, carefully pulling down the zipper just enough to look inside at the purple fabric. For a quiet moment, he simply stared at the shimmering gown, his eyes scanning the details.
Then, something in his hard expression softened completely.
"It looks even better than I imagined," he said softly, his deep voice carrying a strange, gentle warmth that spread straight to my chest. “ How was your trip to the store?”
Natalie immediately stepped forward, unable to contain herself. "You should have seen what happened at the store! This crazy lady tried to—"
"No, Natalie," I cut in quickly, grabbing her elbow.
Natalie blinked, looking at me in surprise. I subtly shook my head at her, giving her a firm look. Whatever Selene's weird problem was, I didn't want to drag Damian into the middle of female petty drama.
"It was totally fine," I said smoothly, turning back to Damian. "No trouble at all."
Natalie stared at me for a second before letting out a dramatic, disappointed sigh. "Yeah it was fine"
Damian looked between the two of us with a suspicious, raised eyebrow. "I feel like I'm missing something here."
"It's nothing iimportant," I replied, giving him a quick smile.
He didn't look entirely convinced, his golden eyes searching my face, but he decided to let it drop. He slowly pulled the zipper back up, closing the garment bag with a crisp snap.
"Good," he murmured, his gaze resting heavily on me. "Because there is something else I need to tell you."
I frowned slightly, shifting my feet on the dirt path. "What is it?"
"The Celestial Mate Ball is approaching," he said calmly.
I nodded slowly, I knew what the it was all about. Everyone in the pack had been talking about it for weeks. It was one of the most important formal events of the entire year, where all the surrounding packs gathered together and where wolves find their fated mates.
"Okay?"
His lips curved into a small, devastating smirk. "You'll be attending with me."
I blinked once, then blinked again. For a long, terrifying second, my brain refused to process the words, assuming I had misheard him completely. "What?"
"You'll be my date," he repeated, his tone calm and completely settled, as if he were just talking about the morning weather.
My mind went completely blank. Beside me, Natalie made a loud, pathetic choking sound, clutching her throat in shock.
Damian walked towards me towering over me as his scent wafted up my nostrils, he casually swung the garment bag over his shoulder as if he hadn't just asked me out to one of the biggest and fanciest events.
"And you'll be wearing that dress," he added, pointing a finger at the purple gown.
My eyes widened so much they actually hurt. "What?!" I squeaked, my voice dropping.
Damian's smirk bloomed into a full, amused grin as he looked down at my pale face. "Why do you look terrified?”
Terrified?
I wasn't terrified. I was approximately two seconds away from collapsing onto the dirt and having a full-blown heart attack.
