Kael woke up at the sound of porcelain crashing against the stone floor, his eyes snapping open. He blinked against the bright morning light, taking in the shattered teacups, Silver's trembling rage and me sitting up in his bed.
He did not look panicked at all, he just looked furious at the intrusion.
"What is the meaning of this, Silver?" Kael asked, his voice sharp and low.
"What is the meaning of this?" Silver shrieked, ignoring Kael completely as she turned her burning glare directly onto me. "What are you doing in his bed, you filthy servant? Look at you, sitting there like you belong here!"
I shrank back against the headboard, my head pounding from the alcohol as I pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders. "Silver, it is not what it looks like—"
"Shut your mouth!" Silver screamed, taking a furious step toward the bed. "You think you can just crawl into the Alpha's sheets? You are a scheming, desperate slut using your cheap tricks to climb out of the gutters...tell me, how many drinks did it take for you to spread your legs for him?"
"I said that is enough, Silver!" Kael barked, standing up from the armchair and adjusting his unbuttoned shirt. He stepped directly between us, his broad body blocking her view of me completely.
"It is not enough" her voixe cracked as she looked at him. "She spent the night in your room, your bedroom Kael How could you let this servant humiliate me in just like this?"
"even if i did how'dtgat be your business?," Kael said, his voice dropping into a cold register. "Aria was sleeping in the bed because she was too intoxicated to walk back to her room after working through my logs all evening. Nothing happened."
"You expect me to believe that?" Silver spat out, her face twisting in pure bitterness. "She obviously lied to you abd e tricked you into feeling sorry for her so she could sleep in your bed. Look at her, she is probably naked under those sheets!"
"I put her on the bed myself because she passed out on the floor, Silver." Kael snapped back, taking a firm step forward. "She worked herself to exhaustion sorting through mess after mess that my advisors left behind. She is my official assistant and she will be treated with respect in this house. You broke into my private quarters without knocking and destroyed property. Lower your voice and leave my room right now before I have the guards drag you out."
"You are choosing her over me?" Silver whimpered, her voice cracking. "A mere sevant?"
"I am choosing basic decency in my own quarters," Kael said coldly. "Out. Now."
Silver let out a choked gasp, glaring past his shoulder at me with pure hatred one last time. "
She turned on her heel and slammed the double doors shut behind her.
I sat frozen on the mattress, my chest tight. A strange knot twisted in my stomach as I watched Kael run a tired hand through his hair. He walked over to the pitcher of water on the side table, poured a glass, and brought it over to me without a word.
"Here," Kael said softly, handing me the glass. "Drink this. Your head must be splitting."
"Alpha... I am so sorry," I whispered, my voice trembling as I took the glass. "I did not mean to cause trouble between you and Silver."
"You did nothing wrong, Aria," Kael replied, his dark eyes searching my face with gentle concern. "She had no right to talk to you like that. Rest as long as you need today. You earned it."
He turned and walked toward his washroom, leaving me alone with my thoughts. A heavy wave of guilt washed over me, making my throat feel dry. Kael had defended my honor without hesitation. He cared about my dignity, even when he had no reason to protect a servant. He was treating me with genuine respect, yet I was sitting in his room planning to ruin him.
I got up and the hangover feeling hut me like a wave, I tried to keep my balance but it was a challenge. until I managed to get out before he could cone back.
Later that afternoon, I was walking down the quiet corridor near the archives when a heavy hand grabbed my elbow and yanked me into a dark storage nook.
I gasped, bumping against the stone wall. Damian stood over me, his face tight with anger, his cedar scent heavy and bitter in the cramped space.
"Is it true?" Damian asked, his voice low and dangerous.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, pulling my arm out of his grip. "Let go of me."
"Silver came to me crying her eyes out," Damian said, narrowing his eyes at me. "She said she walked into Kael's room this morning and found you wrapped up in his sheets. I told you to get close to him, Aria, but I did not expect you to throw yourself into his bed on night one."
A sharp wave of hurt and anger flared in my chest. My hands shook as I stared up at him.
He really thinks so little of me, I thought, my heart aching with sudden, unexpected disappointment. He thinks I am just some desperate girl who jumps into bed with any man who smiles at her.
"You think I slept with him?" I asked, my voice trembling with raw frustration. "Is that really what you think of me, Damian? You think I just gave myself away like some prize?"
"What else am I supposed to think?" Damian snapped back, stepping closer until his shadow covered me. "She finds you in his bed, disheveled, while he is half-dressed...It is too early for this Aria. You are going to ruin the entire plan before we even get our footing and people are going to start talking."
"Let them talk!" I yelled back in a furious whisper, as anger stung from inside. "I did not sleep with him and i just drank too much while proving my worth and going over his pack files. I passed out, and he put me on the bed while he slept in a chair! He respected me enough not to touch me! Which is clearly more than I can say for you!"
Damian went quiet, shifting his weight as he stared down at my flushed face and trembling lips.
"I am risking my neck, my safety, and my entire life to help you take that throne," I said, my chest heaving as emotion poured out of me. "I put up with your demands and your games because I thought we had an understanding. But if you think I am just some cheap slut who throws herself at men, then you can find someone else to do your dirty work. I am done."
I shoved past his shoulder and turned to walk away, my heart hammering against my ribs as I waited to see if he would stop me.
